CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE: In a tragic development, Frank Wycheck, the renowned former Tennessee Titans star, died at the age of 52 on Saturday, December 9, due to a fall at his Chattanooga residence, according to the team's official website.
Wycheck, an accomplished American football player and sports talk radio host, served as a tight end during his 11-season career with the Washington Redskins and the Tennessee Titans.
His remarkable career concluded in 2003, amassing impressive statistics of 505 receptions, 5,126 yards, and 28 touchdowns across 155 games, as detailed on the Tennessee Titans' official website.
Frank Wycheck's family reveal cause of death
Wycheck's family provided additional details on the circumstances leading to the former Titan's passing in a statement featured on the Tennessee Titans' official website.
The statement, as outlined on the official website, reveals, "At this time, it appears Wycheck fell inside his Chattanooga, TN home and hit his head on Saturday morning. He was found unresponsive that afternoon."
Wycheck is survived by two adult daughters, Deanna and Madison, both married, along with three grandchildren named Leo, Stevie, and August.
As per Tennessee Titans' website, the family, following Wycheck's wishes, intends to collaborate with experts for ongoing research on brain injury (TBI) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Funeral arrangements have not been finalized at this time.
Tennessee Titan's owner mourns tragic loss
In response to Wycheck's death, as conveyed on the Tennessee Titans' website, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk of the Titans expressed deep sorrow, stating, "We are all devastated to hear the news of Frank's passing. He was loved by so many, and his memory will always be cherished. Frank's name was synonymous with Titans football."
"He was such a huge part of our team's success both on and off the field. He embraced this community and fan base immediately, and everyone loved him right back. On the field he always seemed to be open and making key plays – he was even part of a Miracle. He worked to become one of the greatest NFL tight ends of his era, evidenced by his three Pro Bowl appearances. Off the field, he was as approachable as anyone could ever be."
"Following his playing career, he continued his connection with our fans and community through his radio career, and his voice became one of the most recognizable in Middle Tennessee. His on-field work and accomplishments rightfully led to his induction in our Ring of Honor, cementing his legacy in our team's lore. We offer our prayers and condolences for Frank's family. Post-retirement, he remained a prominent figure in Middle Tennessee, contributing as a commentator for Titans Radio and hosting a popular sports talk show as a radio host on 104.5-FM's 'The Wake Up Zone' in Nashville.
As per the Tennessee Titans website, Wycheck was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Additionally, he holds a place in the franchise's Ring of Honor.
