HBO releases a statement on Richard Lewis' death
The HBO network reacted to the death as well. They wrote, "We are heartbroken to learn that Richard Lewis has passed away. His comedic brilliance, wit and talent were unmatched. Richard will always be a cherished member of the HBO and Curb Your Enthusiasm families, our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and all the fans who could count on Richard to brighten their days with laughter."
In April 2023, Lewis announced that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and has kept it quiet since 2021. He ended his comedy career after the revelation and retired from his trademark self-deprecating humor.
He has been a legend when it comes to stand-up performances, TV and film roles.
Lewis released a memoir titled ‘The Other Great Depression’ in 2000, reports Variety.
"No, I'm not a very happy man. I'm thrilled to be alive. I'm grateful for who's in my life. I've got great friends, a great wife, a dog, and I have a great career," he told TWP in 2020.
"But there's just a part of me that's always going to be never totally happy. And I think that has a lot to do with my childhood,” he added.
Lewis told Variety in 2021, “I’ve devoted my life to comedy and my sobriety the last almost 27 years. I’m overwhelmed with joy right now. I never learned how to keep joy in my head for more than a minute, but I’m breaking all records for my life today.”
Pal Larry David pays tribute to late comedian Richard Lewis
In a statement shared with Variety by HBO, Larry David said of his longtime co-star and friend, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
