SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, delivered pointed criticism of Democratic leadership in a recent interview with MeidasTouch on Wednesday, April 15, while expressing admiration for Gov Gavin Newsom.
Newsom has previously indicated that he is considering a presidential bid in 2028, with a final decision expected after the 2026 midterm elections.
These developments come at a pivotal moment, as party leaders and strategists reassess direction, leadership, and electoral strategy ahead of the next presidential cycle.
Hunter Biden praises Newsom, critiques Democratic leadership
Hunter Biden criticized the Democratic Party’s leadership, expressing dissatisfaction with how party leaders have conducted themselves politically.
He then praised Newsom, saying, "I think that we have an incredibly strong bench. I think that Gov Newsom is probably the most articulate and greatest warrior we have out there, really loves the way in which he calls out the president.”
He told the host that a clear leader within the Democratic Party will eventually emerge, while also pointing to Gov Andy Beshear and Gov Josh Shapiro as notable figures in the party’s next generation.
“But more than anything, we just have to unify, not just as Democrats. I’m kind of sick of party labels. I am disappointed in much of the Democratic Party, leadership in Congress, in the United States Senate,” Hunter said.
He also praised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying, “I look at somebody like Mayor Mamdani, and I’m inspired, absolutely, completely inspired by the way in which he has not only won his election but the way that he’s leading now.”
Hunter concluded his message, saying, "So I think that your generation is going to have to be the one to kind of lead us out of the wilderness here."
Shapiro, Beshear, and Newsom are widely seen as potential Democratic contenders for the 2028 presidential race, though none has formally announced a campaign.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran in 2024 after Biden withdrew from the race, has also indicated she is considering another bid in 2028.
Hunter Biden targets Trump family over Crypto profits
In the interview, Hunter also weighed in on President Donald Trump and allegations that members of his family have profited from political power, raising renewed concerns over potential conflicts of interest following his return to office.
He was asked about claims that the Trump family has benefited financially from its proximity to power.
The discussion referenced the involvement of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in international peace talks in regions where he also holds real estate interests.
Hunter answered, “Yeah, their hypocrisy knows no bounds, is the way that I look at it, It’s almost too much to keep up with, every single day, whether it’s the World Liberty Financial news that just came out, how they took loans against their own token.”
He was referring to a recent report by CoinDesk alleging that the family’s cryptocurrency venture used 5 billion of its own tokens to secure a $75 million loan on the Dolomite lending platform, which was co-founded by WLF adviser Corey Caplan.
Hunter went on to emphasize that he is not opposed to cryptocurrency itself, stating that he believes “the blockchain is the future.”
He argued that Democrats should adopt a more forward-looking and informed approach to the technology in order to better connect with younger voters.
At the same time, he suggested that Trump and his family have gained an early advantage in the space, adding that they had “corrupted it, almost completely.”
