LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Country music performers Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, whose marital problems became public during the release of his 2020 album 'Reunions,' are going their separate ways in their personal lives.

Online court documents from Williamson County, Tennessee, show that the 'Cover Me Up' singer-songwriter filed for the divorce in his second marriage on December 15, 2023, a few months before the couple's 11th anniversary, per Los Angeles Times.

After collaborating intermittently for ten years in Nashville, the pair married in February 2013 and has an eight-year-old daughter named Mercy.

The 45-year-old artist, who was married to musician Shonna Tucker from 2002 to 2007, cited irreconcilable differences as the cause of the separation.

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires' relationship timeline in brief

Isbell, who made a side career in 2023 by playing Bill Smith in Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' married singer-songwriter and violinist Shires in 2013 after years of periodic collaboration.

The two musicians used to provide support for one other's bands. Isbell played guitar for Shires' band The Highway Women, while Shires performed as a backup singer for Isbell's band The 400 Unit, which won a Grammy for Best American Roots Song.

Apart from providing background vocals and playing the violin with Isbell, Shires has put out eight solo albums and one record with the Highwomen in 2019, where she shared the stage with Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Maren Morris, per Billboard.

The couple initially met and became friends when Shires was playing fiddle in Billy Joe Shaver's band in 2003. After appearing on Isbell's 2011 album 'Here We Rest,' Shires continued as a regular member of the 400 Unit.

The couple's marital troubles were brought to light in Isbell's 2023 documentary 'Running With Our Eyes Closed,' where they could be seen hunkering down at home during the COVID-19 pandemic and debating whether to enroll in marriage counseling.

In a 2020 interview with the New York Times, Isbell—who has been sober since 2012—talked about the challenges the couple had while recording his '2020 Reunions' album in 2019.

In an interview with Variety, Shires expressed her hope that viewers would learn the same lesson from 'Running With Our Eyes Closed' that they did from her 2021 album, 'Take it Like a Man.'

She continued by saying that although her grandfather had always warned her that marriage would be tough, she had never realized just how hard it could be.

Jason Isbell files for divorce from Amanda Shires with a prenuptial agreement in place

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Jason Isbell requested joint custody of their 8-year-old daughter Mercy and stated that their date of separation was December 3, 2023.

Additionally, Isbell stated that he and Shires would create a parenting plan. He has even filed a certificate attesting to his recent acquisition of a parenting skills certificate, which aids parents in guiding their children through divorce.

Spousal support was not mentioned, but everything related to that was likely worked out in their 2013 prenuptial agreement, which Isbell claimed was signed two days before marriage.

Despite the prenuptial agreement, Isbell pointed out that he and Shires have separate property that needs to be divided and assigned. However, he included a restraining order in his file, a common practice in Tennessee and unrelated to any wrongdoing allegations.
