'I can't believe I didn't think of that': Obama takes aim at Trump's Oval Office

WASHINGTON, DC: Barack Obama found an unexpected way to needle President Donald Trump while revisiting a recreation of his old Oval Office.

The former president singled out one conspicuous feature missing from the recreated room: Trump’s gold sign outside the Oval Office.

The moment came in behind-the-scenes footage released by HBO on Monday, August 10, to promote 'Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness', Obama and Michelle Obama’s collaboration with Larry David.

Barack Obama spots what the recreation is missing

Obama entered a 2014 recreation of the Oval Office and complimented the production crew before turning his attention to the details.

“Nice job on the recreation,” Obama told the crew. 

He then noticed the fruit bowl and added, “You even have the apples,” before calling the setup “fantastic.”

But Obama quickly shifted to a detail that was absent from the recreation.

“Although,” he said, “I do want to point out—there’s no gold sign on the outside that says ‘Oval Office,’” prompting chuckles from those in the room.

He followed the observation with a joke that became the sharpest part of the exchange.

“I can’t believe I didn’t think of that,” Obama said.

The remark came as Obama was appearing in a comedic television project that revisits the former president during his time in office.

Trump added the gold sign outside

The footage specifically connects Obama’s visit with changes Trump made to the real-life White House.

In December, Trump had gold cursive letters attached to the exterior of the White House to indicate where the “Oval Office” is located.

The sign was part of a broader gilded makeover of the historic building, which included 24-karat gold-leaf appliqués, doorframes, cherubs and ceiling accents, according to the Daily Beast.

Obama had already criticized Trump’s approach to the White House during a campaign rally in Virginia in November.

He accused Trump of being “focused on critical issues like paving over the Rose Garden so folks don’t get mud on their shoes. And gold-plating the Oval Office and building a $300 million ballroom.”

Obama's joke comes amid TV cameo

Obama appears in the series premiere of 'Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness' in a brief cameo to introduce the show.

He also appears in its seventh and final episode, playing a version of himself from 2014.

That episode turns one of the more memorable moments from Obama’s presidency into comedy.

David plays an aide who spills a Mango Tango smoothie on Obama’s navy blue suit.

His character then encourages Obama to wear the tan suit, which became the focus of a major news cycle at the time.

Trump, meanwhile, defended his White House makeover, declaring that Washington was looking “better than ever” after the gold-infused changes.
