WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris avoided the topic of a vice-presidential debate with the Republican nominee in an NBC News interview on Friday, March 8.

Harris dodged the question of debating the eventual running partner of former President Donald Trump and stated, "We just got through the State of the Union. And I’m just so excited about what we accomplished last night and our president."

Similarly, Harris evaded answering directly on Friday when asked if President Joe Biden would take on Trump in a debate before the 2024 election. The vice president's avoidance of the topic is by no means unusual; it has long been unclear whether any member of the White House will challenge the Trump campaign head-to-head this fall.

Notably, concerns of Republicans and Democrats about President Biden's health and mental state have existed for a considerable amount of time. A presidential debate is typically viewed as a chance to evaluate the candidates' reflexes and under-pressure speaking abilities.

Moreover, the GOP front-runner for 2024, Donald Trump, announced his willingness to debate Joe Biden on Wednesday afternoon, only a few hours after Nikki Haley, his last opponent, had withdrawn her candidacy.

Regarding Trump's challenge, ABC News correspondent Mary Bruce questioned Harris about Biden's commitment to go off against his most likely opponent. Harris, at first, dodged the question and shifted focus to the President's State of the Union address praising Biden's "passionate" performance.

Bruce asked, "But given what you argue is at stake here, will you take the chance to show voters more of what they saw last night to take on Trump directly in debates?" to which Harris replied, "We'll get to that at some point, and we'll deal with that."

She added, "But the point is, right now, on this day after the State of the Union, I think the president laid down the facts for the American people in terms of what's at stake. And I thought he did an extraordinary job."
