WEST LONDON, ENGLAND: Actor Idris Elba has addressed years of speculation surrounding the possibility of him portraying James Bond, revealing that he was never truly in contention for the iconic role.

Speaking during the premiere of 'Masters of the Universe' on Monday, May 18, Elba reflected on how the rumors developed over time and discussed the public reaction that followed. He also opened up about his views on the future of the Bond franchise and his current acting projects.

Idris Elba says he was never in James Bond race

For more than a decade, Elba’s name was repeatedly linked to the role of Bond following actor Daniel Craig’s tenure as the British spy. Rumors gained momentum after a leaked 2014 Sony email from executive Amy Pascal reportedly identified him as a potential choice for the role.

However, he clarified during the premiere that he was never officially being considered. “I was never truly in the race,” he said, while also adding, “I think I’m probably too old now for that anyway.” The actor also spoke about the direction the franchise appears to be taking, noting, “It sounds like they’re going for a younger person."

Over the years, he consistently downplayed the possibility of portraying the British spy. In previous interviews, Elba questioned whether committing to such a globally recognized character would fit with the kind of career he wanted.

“It’s a coveted role, but it’s not something that I think would satisfy some of my personal goals,” he previously said while discussing the role.

Although Elba acknowledged that many fans supported the idea of him becoming Bond, he admitted that the public debate eventually became uncomfortable once race entered the conversation.

Reflecting on the backlash, he said, “Those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting.” He added that the speculation initially felt flattering before online discussions shifted negatively. “It became about race, and it became nonsense.”

Idris Elba discusses James Bond rumors and new action roles

Throughout the prolonged speculation, Elba’s name frequently resurfaced whenever discussions about the future of the Bond franchise emerged. Supporters often praised him as a strong candidate, while critics debated whether the role should be reimagined.

Elba is now focused on promoting 'Masters of the Universe,' in which he stars as Duncan. During the premiere, he shared his enthusiasm about joining the franchise and spoke about his admiration for the original series.

He also reflected on the physically demanding nature of many of his recent projects. “I’ve done a lot of action over the years,” he said while discussing productions including Hijack and his latest role in the Mattel-owned series.

“To get to play Duncan and change him, make him look like me, was a real treat. I got to be a bit comedic and big, so I went for it. I've done quite a few action films over the last three years. Some a little bit more cerebral action, like Hijack, but this has been a lot of fighting. I have to stay in shape so I can run and punch,” Elba added.
