WASHINGTON, DC: Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar appeared on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’ on Sunday, January 11, to discuss the recent shooting in Minneapolis during which a mother of three, Renee Good, lost her life after being shot three times by an agent of ICE.
The representative criticized the likes of Donald Trump and Kristi Noem for jumping the gun with their characterization of Good as a domestic te****ist before the investigation was concluded, as she argued it was “not acceptable” to the administration to malign someone’s character without proper proof and investigation.
Ilhan Omar emphasizes importance of documenting interactions with ICE agents
Margaret Brennan from ‘Face the Nation’ asked Minnesota representative, Ilhan Omar, about Donald Trump and Kristi Noem’s statements about Jonathan Ross fatally shooting Renee Good. The host further wondered whether it was “too dangerous” for people to be participating in anti-ICE demonstrations while also documenting their experiences with ICE agents.
Omar noted that it was important for Americans to record and create a level of accountability that was needed. She added that it was an ongoing scenario in Minneapolis that ICE agents would jump out of their unmarked cars while wearing masks while approaching people.
“Oftentimes these people are citizens, oftentimes these people have documentation of their legal right to be in this country and we know that DHS has lied repeatedly when it comes to these accounts,” Omar claimed.
She said that it was essential that there were recordings from witnesses and bystanders. Omar said she believed it was fair for citizens to document what law enforcement agents were doing in their communities since there had been violence against residents in Minneapolis.
Ilhan Omar contradicts Trump’s admin’s perspective of the Minneapolis shooting
Omar was asked about the video clips circulating online regarding the recent Minneapolis shooting. Brennan asked whether the Democrat believed they showcased certain things that should not have been done by the victim of the crime, and if she disagreed with the Trump administration’s characterization of the events that unfolded.
Ilhan Omar described the sequence of events that was featured in multiple videos online and said that an experienced and trained officer would not have attempted to get in front of a moving car.
“It is not acceptable for Kristi Noem and the president and the vice president to make these kinds of judgments without there being a full investigation,” she said.
Omar argued that the administration’s statements did not align with what had happened and urged them to let the investigation take place before they mischaracterize Good. She urged the administration to present evidence that Good was paid to be a part of the protest and that she was agitated since she told the officers she wasn’t mad at them.
“This level of rhetoric is unjustifiable to the American people,” she added.
