Colman Domingo on playing Joe Jackson's character

Playing Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson’s father in the flick, he said, “I’m having a good time with it.”

“Right now I seem to be on the track of interrogating some of these real-life human beings. I want to find their humanity, I want to find their heart and their humor. It may go against public opinion sometimes, but I think that's my responsibility to find the complex version of these people.”

Joe died in 2018 and is said to have a complicated relationship with his 11 children, as per People.

In her memoir, Joe’s daughter La Toya Jackson wrote that “he abused her and terrorized her brothers, often pointing guns at the kids to get their attention.”

Domingo talked about landing the role in a January press release and said he saw Michael’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, son of Michael’s brother Jermaine.

“After seeing him in rehearsal, my mind was blown. There is something divine about the way that Jaafar is channeling his late uncle. His talent and embodiment of Michael’s essence is simply on another level,” said the actor.

Michael Jackson's father Joe died of pancreatic cancer

Joe passed away while battling pancreatic cancer in 2018. “We want to thank you all for the support you have shown us as we grieve for the patriarch of our family. We mourn the loss of our father and celebrate the life of a man who sacrificed so much to give us the life and success we have today. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this time,” the family said in a statement back then.

Prince Michael Jackson, grandson of Joe and son of Michael, wrote on social media, “This man is and always will be an example or sheer willpower and dedication. He didn’t choose the path that was the easiest but he choose the path that was best for his family.”

The other cast members of the mpvie 'Michael' include Nia Long as Jackson's matriarch Katherine and Miles Teller as entertainment lawyer John Branca.

‘Michael’ is expected to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
