Indian-origin family of three found dead in $5M Massachusetts mansion died of murder-suicide
NORFOLK, MASSACHUSETTS: Authorities have revealed that on Thursday night, a family of three was discovered deceased in their $5 million Massachusetts mansion, with no signs of a break-in.
The Norfolk District Attorney's Office said on Tuesday that investigators had concluded that the tragedy that killed Rakesh and Teena Kamal and their teenage daughter, Arianna, was a murder-suicide.
Cops say man shot wife, daughter, then killed himself
As per NBC-Boston, prosecutors have indicated that Rakesh Kamal, 57, is believed to have fatally shot his wife Teena, 54, and daughter Arianna, 18, before turning the gun on himself inside their spacious Dover residence.
Authorities said that a .40-caliber Glock 22, not owned by Rakesh, was found at the site.
A gun was discovered close to the husband's body, but district attorney Michael Morrissey previously referred to their deaths as a "domestic violence situation" and said there was no proof that any outside parties were involved.
However, until the medical examiner performed autopsies, the prosecutor refrained from referring to the tragedy as a murder-suicide or even confirming that the three had been shot.
A relative visited the 11-bedroom, 13-bathroom house the Thursday after Christmas to check on the family, as they had been unable to reach any of them, and made the tragic discovery.
The mansion, which is thought to be worth $5.45 million, still had its Christmas lights on the following day when police cars blocked the entrance.
At the time of her murder, the couple's freshman daughter, who was on winter break from Middlebury College in Vermont, was studying neuroscience. Prior to the murder-suicide, the Kamals were having financial difficulties, according to documents the New York Post examined.
Kamal family's estate went into foreclosure
According to property records, their enormous 19,000-square-foot estate went into foreclosure a year ago and was purchased by Wilsondale Associates LLC, a company based in Massachusetts, for $3 million.
According to the documents, the family paid $4 million for the house in 2019.
Teena, who previously co-owned the education systems business EduNova with her spouse, also filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in September 2022, according to court documents, citing debts of between $1 million and $10 million.
However, two months later, the case was dropped for lack of supporting documentation. As per official records, EduNova was established in 2016 and dissolved in December 2021.
Morrissey stated that there had been no prior reports of domestic problems within the family. At the first press briefing, he stated, "This is very unfortunate and our heart goes out to the entire Kamal family on this terrible tragedy."
Regarding instances of domestic abuse, Morrissey continued, "I hate to see it at any time. I think some of the tensions that people feel in relationships often come out around the holidays.”
