LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Columnist Bret Stephens of the New York Times suggested that President Joe Biden withdraw from the 2024 presidential election to allow a more youthful Democratic leader to emerge and defeat former President Donald Trump in the November contest.

"Biden is sleepwalking to defeat against a felonious adversary who three years ago incited violence to overturn an election," Stephens wrote in an op-ed from Tuesday, June 11, with the headline, "The most courageous thing that Joe Biden can do."

Bret Stephens said Joe Biden 'can still choose not to run'

"It all leaves the president with one option that can be a win for America and, ultimately, his place in history," Stephens wrote, according to Fox News. "He can still choose not to run, to cede the field to a Democrat who can win — paging Josh Shapiro or Gretchen Whitmer — and do the hard and brave things it will take to secure security and peace for the free world," he added.

"There’s still time, if only just," Stephens, who supported Biden in 2020, wrote of the rapidly closing window that the president has to drop out of the race. "It would be a courageous, honorable and transformative legacy," he further noted.

The rising stars within the Democratic Party

Both Michigan Governor Whitmer and Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro are rising stars in the Democratic Party and are the governors of significant swing states that could influence the outcome of the 2024 election. Shapiro and Whitmer are 50 and 52 years old, respectively, while Biden is 81 years old.

Stephens argued that Biden's unpopularity with voters, with "the lowest approval rating of his time in office," puts him in serious need of "some wins — real, not cosmetic, ones."

Stephens on how Biden can cement his legacy with voters

Stephens also advised Biden on how to "secure" his international policy legacy with voters, particularly with regard to Israel and the Ukraine.

"The more Biden does to ‘Trump-proof’ U.S. support for Ukraine against the risk of losing in November, the more secure his legacy will be," the columnist wrote, suggesting that Biden send "U.S.-made cruise missiles" to aid the war effort against Russia.

Election data guru Nate Silver also responded to Biden’s latest poll numbers

Nate Silver, creator of "FiveThirtyEight" and an expert in election data, also commented on Biden's most recent polling results. According to Silver, Biden's declining approval rating to 37.4% could be sufficient reason for the Democratic front-runner to withdraw from the 2024 race for president. "Dropping out would be a big risk," Silver wrote in an X post on Monday.

He claimed that Democrats would have been given a fighting chance if Biden had eliminated himself from the upcoming election earlier.

Internet users give their opinions after Bret Stephens' comments on Joe Biden

Netizens provided their response after the NY Times columnist suggested Biden to withdraw from the election. One X user tweeted, "Trump is going to win in a landslide." Another added, "Biden won't let the Dems replace him. They know this." "He’s too old. Harris should take his place," opined one. "The debate is Biden's test. If he does not fail completely he will be the nominee," commented another.

"People actually voted for and were excited to vote for Biden, that has to be one of the most hilarious things in world history," said one user.
