LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: John Oliver, the acclaimed comedian and host of HBO's 'Last Week Tonight',  could not keep himself away from the web of intrigue surrounding what some are calling the "Katespiracy".

In a recent conversation with television host Andy Cohen on 'Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen', Oliver couldn't resist delving into the bizarre events surrounding the digitally-altered photo of Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, released by Kensington Palace.

Oliver's initial avoidance turns to bewilderment as Kate's photoshop controversy unfolds

"I was out. I thought, 'Let's all just ignore this, we've moved on,' until the photoshop thing," Oliver told Cohen, expressing his initial attempt to stay out of the royal photo controversy.

"That feels, like, you're almost handling it badly in an impressive way at this point," he added, highlighting his bewilderment at the situation.

The altered photo, promptly removed by major photo agencies due to concerns over its authenticity, triggered a statement from Kate herself, where she acknowledged the confusion and apologized.

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing," the Princess of Wales said in her statement, addressing the controversy.

This move left both Oliver and Cohen scratching their heads, with Cohen questioning the departure from the royal tradition of "never complain, never explain".

"Because isn't their motto, 'Never complain, never explain?' And then they have her explaining on Twitter?" Cohen remarked, expressing his bemusement at Kate's apology.

Oliver injects irreverent humor into Kate's photoshop controversy

Oliver, known for his irreverent humor, couldn't resist speculating on the situation's absurdity.

"There is a non-zero chance that she died 18 months ago," he joked, suggesting a scenario akin to the film 'Weekend at Bernie's'.

"I'm not saying it happened, but I'm saying it's non-zero until proven otherwise. Until we see her sitting there with a copy of the day's paper," Oliver added, making a throat-cutting motion with his hand.

According to Business Insider, Oliver has been a vocal critic of the British monarchy, previously likening them to a vestigial organ that society has outgrown.

"They're like a human appendix. We've long evolved past needing them, and there's a compelling case for their surgical removal," Oliver said in a segment aired in November 2022, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Kate's prolonged absence from public view has only fueled the flames of speculation, leading to a proliferation of conspiracy theories online.

Terms like "Katespiracy" and "KateGate" have emerged as shorthand for the myriad unconfirmed and often outlandish theories circulating on the Internet.
