WASHINGTON, DC: The New York Times editorial board has called for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the Democratic presidential ticket, describing his campaign as an embarrassment.

The editorial suggests that Biden staying in the race increases the chances of former President Donald Trump winning back the White House.

The editorial argues that Biden’s refusal to step aside endangers his legacy and the Democratic Party’s chances of defeating Trump in November.

New York Times says Joe Biden is 'endangering his legacy'

In the editorial published on Monday, July 8, the Times wrote that Democrats who want to defeat Trump should “speak plainly to the president.”

The board expressed concern that Biden is no longer an effective spokesperson for his priorities.

“They need to tell him that his defiance threatens to hand victory to Mr Trump. They need to tell him that he is embarrassing himself and endangering his legacy," The Hill reported.

Despite the criticism, Biden has been pushing back forcefully, asserting his belief that he is the best Democrat to defeat Trump.

He has already secured the delegates necessary to be his party’s nominee and has been actively defending his candidacy through interviews and public statements.

“For voters who held out hope that President Biden’s failure to communicate during last month’s debate was an aberration, the intervening days have offered little comfort,” the board wrote in its piece.

Joe Biden has 'maintained a scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances'

The Times editorial also highlighted Biden’s failure to restore confidence in his ability to campaign effectively.

They noted that instead of vigorously campaigning to dispel doubts about his capabilities, Biden has maintained a “scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances.”

Donald Trump’s candidacy for a second term poses a grave threat to American democracy," the board wrote.

"Mr Biden, instead of campaigning vigorously to disprove doubts and demonstrate that he can beat Mr Trump, has maintained a scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances," it said.

Joe Biden continues 'to appear as a man in decline'

Furthermore, the editorial pointed out that Biden has largely avoided taking questions from voters or journalists, which could expose his limitations.

“He has largely avoided taking questions from voters or journalists — the kinds of interactions that reveal his limitations and caused him so much trouble on the debate stage," the board wrote.

"And when he has cast aside his teleprompter, most notably during a 22-minute interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Friday, he has continued to appear as a man in decline," the board noted.

Internet reacts to NYT's take on Joe Biden's reelection bid

The editorial has sparked a range of reactions online. One person commented, “Biden isn’t embarrassing himself. He has no idea what’s going on. He’s embarrassing the ENTIRE country. Other countries are laughing at us.” Another wrote, “He must GO!!!!”

Some expressed skepticism towards the media, with one person saying, “We can no longer rely on media to tell us the truth!!!!”

Another user expressed surprise at agreeing with the Times, stating, “I have to agree w/the NYT.. Which would be the 1st in many years.”

However, not everyone is convinced that Biden will step down, with one predicting, “NOT GONNA HAPPEN!”

Critics were vocal about their dissatisfaction, with one writing, “He’s embarrassing our Country," another added, They put him there and now they can’t remove him. How’s that selection looking now?”

Another added, “He’s used to it. He’s been embarrassing himself his whole life.”
