Internet agrees with Peter Welch after he says Joe Biden could take other Democrats down with him
WASHINGTON, DC: Vermont Senator Peter Welch (D) expressed concerns that President Joe Biden’s potential defeat in upcoming elections could take other Democrats down with him.
He stressed on the importance of defeating former President Donald Trump and having a Democrat in the office.
Peter Welch says Joe Biden is 'wrestling' with question if he should continue his reelection bid
Welch's comments come amid increasing anxiety among Democrats about Biden's chances of winning 2024 election, especially following his recent debate performance.
“So if we do really poorly at the presidential level, that creates a fierce undertow," he said on CNN.
He noted that having a Democrat in the office would greatly benefit Senate candidates facing tough challenges.
"The most important thing is to have Trump out of the office, a Democrat in office. Doing that I think is the best help that we can give to our Senate candidates who are doing great but having a tough challenge,” he said, according to The Hill.
When asked if Biden should continue his re-election bid, Welch responded, “That’s the question. He’s wrestling with that."
"He’s reading the polls. I’m confident that at the end of the day the president will make his decision based on what’s best for the country," he added.
Peter Welch suggests open contest if Joe Biden decides not to run for president
Welch also suggested that if Biden decides not to run for president, there should be an open competition at the Democratic National Convention to choose the party’s nominee.
“If it came to an open contest — if the president made that decision — then it would have to be open," he said.
"We have a tremendous bench, starting with the vice president. We also have party unity. Everybody who would be running is running on a continuation of the Biden accomplishments," he added.
Welch concluded by reiterating the importance of choosing the best candidate to defeat Trump, acknowledging the strong pool of Democratic candidates.
“The big question for all of us is who’s the best candidate to win the presidency and defeat Trump? And I don’t know the answer to that, but I know we have a lot of really good candidates, including the vice president,” he said.
Internet says 'damage is done' referring to the potential consequences of Joe Biden's re-election run
Biden has been trying to reassure top Democrats that he can defeat Trump, but concerns have grown since his debate performance.
Welch criticized the Biden campaign for dismissing these worries earlier this week, stating, “I really do criticize the campaign for a dismissive attitude towards people who are raising questions for discussion. That’s just facing the reality we’re in.”
Internet reactions have been swift and sharp. One user remarked, "Down with the ship and the crew and the captain too," referring to the potential consequences of Biden's re-election run.
Another joked, "That would be the best thing for the country that Biden ever did in his whole life, whch is running for relection and taking down all other Democrats with him.
Some users suggested a need for new faces in both the presidential and vice-presidential roles. “Like Harris wouldn’t do the same – need two new faces, one for POTUS the other for VPOTUS,” one commenter wrote.
Another observed, “Dam is breaking,” while someone else shared a meme captioned, "Damage is done." One user noted, “Curiously it's mostly the House Democrats in their 70s and 80s that are worried.”
