PLAINS, GEORGIA: In a poignant update, Jason Carter, the oldest grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, believes his grandfather is nearing the end of his life after being in hospice care for over a year.

Jason shared the update while speaking at the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum, which was the first such event organized by the center since former First Lady Rosalynn Carter's death at 96 on November 19, 2023, as per The Hill.

Jason, who chairs The Carter Center Board of Trustees, spoke openly about the impact of his grandmother's death on their family and particularly on his grandfather.

He told the audience, "First of all, as you all have expected, I’m sure, my grandmother’s passing was a difficult moment for all of us, including my grandfather. And this is, of course, the first of these forums since that day, but the outpouring of love and support that we as a family received from the people in this room and from the rest of the world was so remarkable and meaningful to us."

Expressing his gratitude, Jason thanked the community and global supporters for their heartfelt responses, which turned his grandmother's death into a celebration of her life. He then updated the attendees on his grandfather's current condition.

"My grandfather is doing okay. He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now. And he really is, I think, coming to the end," revealed the ex-POTUS' grandson.

Jason also shared touching memories from his recent visit with his grandfather, when they watched a Braves baseball game together.

"I said, 'Papa, you know, I can’t—people ask me how you’re doing, and I say I don’t know.' And he said, 'Well, I don’t know myself,'" recounted former President Carter's grandson. Despite the uncertainty, he assured the audience, "So he is still there."

Reflecting on his grandfather's journey, Jason highlighted the importance of faith in his life, noting, "As I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him. And there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end, and I think he has been there in that space."

Former President Carter had announced in February 2023 that he entered hospice care, opting to forego any further medical interventions to spend his remaining time with his family.
