WASHINGTON, DC: Former US President Donald Trump, in an interview with host Lou Dobbs on Lindell TV on Monday, January 8, expressed his desire for an economic crash within the next year, stating, "When there's a crash, I hope it's in the next 12 months because I don't want to be Herbert Hoover."

In response, current US President Joe Biden released a campaign video on Thursday, January 11, where the 81-year-old incumbent rebukes his predecessor’s statement, informing him that he has already "become like Herbert Hoover".

The reference is to the 31st US President, Herbert Hoover who took office at the end of the prosperous "Roaring Twenties" and was later faced with the Wall Street Crash of 1929, followed by the Great Depression, which eventually led to his removal from office in 1932, according to the Independent.

The Biden campaign team responded to Trump’s comments at the time by quoting the POTUS from the January 6 anniversary event in Pennsylvania on Friday, January 5.

Their statement read on X, “President Biden three days ago: ‘Donald Trump’s campaign is about him. Not America. Not you.’”

"In the four years Donald Trump was president— and he's the only president other than Herbert Hoover who actually lost jobs in a four-year period," President Biden said in December 2023, drawing comparisons between Trump and Hoover, adding. "And that’s why I often re- — think of him as Donald ‘Herbert Hoover’ Trump.”

What did Joe Biden’s campaign ad released on Thursday entail?

President Joe Biden posted the campaign advertisement on X on Thursday with a caption that read, “They showed me the clip of Trump saying he wanted the economy to crash so he could gain politically. Says he doesn’t want to be Hoover. Here's the thing: He already is. He’s the first president since Hoover to lose jobs while in office. Some record.”

In his video, Biden claimed, “He’s acknowledging that my economy is doing pretty darn well because he doesn’t want that to continue.”

“And by the way, the fact that he wants to see a crash in the next 12 months – he doesn’t want to be Herbert Hoover – he has to understand, he’s already Herbert Hoover,” the 81-year-old incumbent stated, adding. “He’s the only other president who’s lost jobs during his term.”

Trump declared on Monday in his interview on the MAGA loyalist network owned by conspiracy theorist and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, that the US economy is “running off the fumes of what we did” and claimed that a crash before the end of the year would hurt the Biden administration.

“We have an economy that’s so fragile, and the only reason it’s running now is it’s running off the fumes of what we did. It’s just running off the fumes,” the GOP front-runner said.

Trump continued, “And when there’s a crash — I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover.”

Despite his claims that the current state of the US economy is doing far worse than that during his tenure in the White House, in reality, stats and numbers suggest that it is in a relatively strong position.

Per the Independent's report, inflation, which peaked at a 40-year high of 9.1% in June 2022, has since fallen to a mere 3.1% in November 2023.

Additionally, unemployment has decreased to 3.7%, and in the final month of 2023, and it was revealed that 216,000 new jobs had been created.

Internet trolls Trump for his fear of comparison with one-term Republican POTUS like Hoover

People on X ridiculed the former president for hoping that the US economy would crash by the time the general elections come around in November.

One user wrote: “Trump can't become our leader again after creating a civil war between white people. If so, what's next? CONCENTRATION CAMPS @ChrisCoons @JohnCarneyDE @POTUS @WhiteHouse #JoeBiden @GovernorShapiro @GovChristie @SenWarren @BarackObama".

Another X user remarked, "I like this new "gloves off" Biden."

Another user said, "He doesn't care how people would be impacted by a crash; he just wants it to fail so he can claim he's going to fix it."

One user quipped, "Trumps a twofer, Herbert Hoover and Benedict Arnold."

Another X user stated, "Donald Trump is so cartoonishly sloppy that he says the quiet part out loud more often than any politician in America. And he does it so casually. Truth: Republicans have been rooting and working against America's comeback since Joe Biden's first day in office. Didn't work."

Finally, this user tweeted, "Trump is the BIGGEST LOSER OF ALL TIME"
