WASHINGTON, DC: Former president Donald Trump faced people’s wrath online after he claimed that he hopes the US economy collapses in the upcoming 12 months.

The 77-year-old Republican front-runner stated in an interview with Lou Dobbs that he would not want to spend a term like that of former president Herbert Hoover, who took office during a period of calm economic conditions but then oversaw the outbreak of the Great Depression.

Despite railing against the economy, Trump acknowledged that it had some positive features and claimed responsibility for such achievements.

“We have an economy that’s so fragile, and the only reason it’s running now is it’s running off the fumes of what we did It’s just running off the fumes,” he asserted in the interview that aired on Monday, January 8.

The real estate mogul then continued, “And when there’s a crash — I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover.”

Contrary to Trump's remarks, the US economy ended 2023 with strong performance across several metrics, including low unemployment, strong job growth, and decreased inflation.

The Biden campaign responded to Trump’s comments by quoting Biden at an event a few days earlier. “President Biden three days ago: ‘Donald Trump’s campaign is about him. Not America. Not you,’” the statement read on X, formerly Twitter.

In December 2023, the 81-year-old POTUS compared Trump to Hoover, saying, “In the four years Donald Trump was president — and he’s the only president other than Herbert Hoover who actually lost jobs in a four-year period. And that’s why I often re- — think of him as Donald ‘Herbert Hoover’ Trump.”

Trump attacks Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger

At one point in the interview, Trump launched attacks at Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, calling them “far worse” than all Democrats.

He continued to disparage the January 6 committee, its members, and the sessions while repeating the untrue assertion that it had erased all of its evidence related to the Capitol attack.

“They’ve taken that hearing, which was a total sham, with all Democrats and two Republicans that were far worse than any Democrat that ever lived,” Trump said, referring to Cheney and Kinzinger. “Two very sick Republicans.”

The former president has frequently targeted Cheney and Kinzinger, two Republicans who stand in opposition to his hold on the party.

Internet reacts to Donald Trump’s remarks about economy

After Donald  Trump’s latest interview surfaced on social media, many users attacked him for claiming that he hopes the US economy collapses in the upcoming 12 months.

“He just hates every minute because the economy is thriving, the market is strong, oil production is booming, and we’re on our way out of the mess he left us in. Even Ken Griffin is surprised by how well the economy is doing,” one user fumed.

“He already beat Hoover’s records. Being Hoover would be an improvement for him,” the second user said.

“He is not worth any position of trust. He is a traitor to this nation,” a third user mocked.

“You are no Herbert Hoover. You are simply the worst president the country has ever had,” the fourth user slammed, while the fifth one wrote “He already crashed the economy. Look at his record before Covid.”

“Of course, because it’s always all about him. He has no conscience about wishing disaster on everyone to further his own advantage. What a pathetic excuse for a human being. 🙄,” one more said.
