Internet heartbroken as 'General Hospital' star Tyler Christopher's cause of death revealed after 3 months

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA: The cause of death of 'General Hospital' star Tyler Christopher has been revealed three months after his demise. The 50-year-old actor died in October 2023 due to "positional asphyxia" resulting from acute alcohol intoxication.

The Medical Examiner Office's report obtained by TMZ indicated that his death was accidental and occurred due to how he was positioned.

The report mentioned that Tyler Christopher also had coronary artery atherosclerosis, a condition involving plaque build-up in arteries, contributing to complications. Atherosclerosis can lead to the narrowing of coronary arteries, limiting blood flow to the heart.

TMZ reported that officers visited the house around 9:30 am on that fateful day on October 31 after a friend called 911. "It appeared that he had been dead for some time," he told authorities.

Sources told the outlet that Christopher's friend had been unable to reach the actor and went to his home to check on him. In spite of the home being locked, the friend was able to enter with a key provided by the actor, sources said.

Christopher was found in the bedroom.

Christopher's death was publicly announced  by his friend and former co-star Maurice Benard on Instagram, "It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Tyler Christopher. Tyler passed away this morning following a cardiac event in his San Diego apartment."

"Tyler was a truly talented individual that lit up the screen in every scene he performed and relished bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting,' Benard said on the social media site. 

"Tyler was a sweet soul and wonderful friend to all of those who knew him."

In his personal life, Christopher had been married twice, first to 'Desperate Housewives' alum Eva Longoria from 2002 to 2004 and later to ESPN personality Brienne Pedigo from 2008 to 2021. He leaves behind two children, a son named Greysun James and a daughter named Boheme. 

Christopher's death followed his struggles with mental health and substance use, as he openly spoke about his battles with bipolar depression and alcohol. The soap opera community and fans mourned the loss of the talented actor.
