LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: This week, a Las Vegas courtroom was the scene of chaos when defendant Debora Redden attacked the judge overseeing his case. The shocking incident was captured on video and quickly went viral across the Internet.

Now, in a surprising development, Redden is set to appear again on Tuesday, January 9, for sentencing in front of the very same judge he assaulted. Judge Mary Kay Holthus has indicated she will continue to preside over the case, despite sustaining injuries in the attack.

Judge Mary Kay Holthus was knocked out of her seat

On Wednesday, January 3, 30-year-old convicted felon Debora Redden appeared before Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus for sentencing on an attempted battery conviction.

Holthus was preparing to sentence Redden to prison time due to his violent history when suddenly Redden leaped over the stand and attacked the judge, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral online. Footage shows Redden knocking 62-year-old Holthus out of her seat as several officers rushed to intervene. It took over two minutes for officials to finally restrain Redden and remove him from the courtroom.

After being detained, Redden blamed his outrageous actions on having a “bad day” and told officers he was trying to kill Judge Holthus, whom he called “evil.” He also apologized to the officers, saying, “I’m sorry you guys had to see that.”

Judge Mary Kay Holthus and court officials suffered injuries in attack

Both Judge Holthus and court officials suffered injuries in the attack. Holthus hit her head against the wall when knocked down and later went to the hospital for continued pain, although she has since been released.

Court marshal Shane Brandon had endured a serious laceration to his face requiring 25 stitches. Law clerk Michael Lasso also sustained minor hand abrasions while trying to restrain Redden.

Despite her injuries, Holthus says she will still oversee Redden’s new hearing and sentencing on January 9. She said Redden’s actions were “unique” and unprecedented in the courthouse.
