WASHINGTON, DC: A group of House Republicans, led by Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida), is pushing to award former president Donald Trump the Congressional Gold Medal, Fox News reported.

On Tuesday, May 14, Luna along with GOP Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pennsylvania), Rep Lauren Boebert (Colorado), Rep Andy Ogles (Tennessee), Rep Randy Weber (Texas), Rep Bob Good (Virginia), Rep Mary Miller (Illinois), and Rep Mike Waltz (Florida) presented the congressional resolution to confer the coveted medal on Trump "in recognition of his exceptional leadership and dedication to strengthening America's diplomatic relations during his presidency.”

According to Politico, the resolution also includes the following clause, "the greatest of President Trump's foreign policy achievements was that no wars were started while he was in office."

"President Trump’s fearless leadership reestablished America as a respected and admired global power," Luna told Fox News Digital. "It is time we recognize a president who put our country first and secured global peace through bold diplomacy,” she added.

“Despite the liberal media's attempts to spread fear, America and the world were undoubtedly safer under President Donald Trump. One of our duties in Congress is to honor those who have contributed significantly to our nation, and that’s why I’m introducing this legislation," the Sunshine State lawmaker explained.

Interestingly enough, Rep Bob Good (R-Virginia), the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, who had a contentious relationship with some of former president Donald Trump's inner circle earlier this year, is also a co-sponsor of Tuesday’s congressional resolution.

The likelihood of the Democrat-controlled Senate considering the bill is minimal. However, this further proves that Donald Trump continues to be the de facto leader of the GOP.

The Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the most prestigious civilian awards in the United States.

Notable recipients of the award have included the Dalai Lama, the Tuskegee Airmen, and golfer Jack Nicklaus, among others.

Internet slams Luna and GOP for trying to give Trump the Congressional Gold Medal

After the news was reported, users on the internet slammed Luna and the seven other Republicans for their effort to grant the honor to Donald Trump.

One X user wrote, "As a Floridian, I find this to be a waste of time. With so many issues that are priorities, and she is using her elected position to prop up Trump. I remember not long ago a Florida state Representative wanted to pass a bill to make Florida taxpayers pay for Trump's legal bills. These stunts from the Trump sycophants are going to start turning off independent voters."

Another said, "They need to focus on more Important things."

One user wrote, "The bootlicking on display with this resolution is just amazing."

Another added, "The rapist currently on trial for trying to rig an Election, and who will eventually go on trial for stealing classified documents? Um, no thank you?"

One individual quipped, "In other words, screw America, give Goldmember something shiny... I hate these people."

Another tweeted, "Again, I understand why they call the GOP the stupid party."
