WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to block a lower court ruling rejecting his immunity claim in the 2020 election subversion case brought by special counsel Jack Smith, reports CNN.

DC Court of Appeals on February 6 unanimously rejected the Republican frontrunner's absolute presidential immunity claim to protect him from the prosecution over his alleged crimes to overturn the 2020 election result.

"We cannot accept that the office of the Presidency places its former occupants above the law for all time thereafter," the three-panel circuit judges wrote in the 57-page opinion, as per CNN.

Trump's lawyers cited the effect of the lower court's ruling on the White House hopefuls' ongoing campaign ahead of the crucial presidential election.

"Conducting a months-long criminal trial of President Trump at the height of election season will radically disrupt President Trump's ability to campaign against President Biden," Trump's lawyers wrote in their request filed on Monday, February 12.

The emergency filing adds to the conservative majority apex court to decide the political future of the ex-president along with the ongoing hearing on his appeal to overturn the Colorado Supreme Court's decision to remove him from the ballot.

Donald Trump's attorney claims DC federal court's ruling threatens First Amendment rights

The former President's lawyers argued that the lower court decision "threatens immediate irreparable injury to the First Amendment interests of President Trump and tens of millions of American voters, who are entitled to hear President Trump's campaign message as they decide how to cast their ballots in November."

According to the White House, the Constitution's First Amendment protects the citizen's "freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The 6-3 conservative majority SCOTUS's ruling on the issue will effectively decide how quickly Trump can be put on trial for criminal allegations as he closes in on the Republican nomination to likely face President Joe Biden in November.

District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, in early February, canceled a March 4 trial date on his election interference case in light of the then impending lower court decisions on Trump's immunity claims.

Now, with the former President appealing at the Supreme Court, it remains to be seen how long the federal cases against him will be delayed as the nation heads into a crucial presidential election.

Internet outraged over Donald Trump's appeal

Netizens slammed the presidential hopeful for asking the Supreme Court to block the lower court decision against his presidential immunity claims.

One user said, "He still thinks he is special asking Supreme Court.. sheee."

Another user remarked, "Trump is so pathetic along with followers who are lame ignorant and morons."

"And so the stalling continues, and will until after the election. And if he wins, he'll just pardon himself and there will be no consequences for his crimes. All facilitated by a corrupt Supreme Court," a third user opined.

A fourth user added, "Desperate Trump lawyers try a ridiculous desperate move."

One user labeled Trump' demand "Absurd!!" and another one wrote, "What a farce."

"Whining about his campaign again? Irrelevant, you can't commit crimes then run for office to use as a delay tactic," read another remark.
