WASHINGTON, DC: CNN political commentator Van Jones asserted that with his ballot lawsuit and other legal disputes, former president Donald Trump is engaging in "a game of chicken" with the United States Supreme Court and other government agencies.

During his appearance on CNN on Thursday, Jones remarked, “It’s just bizarre to me to watch the system continue to bend over backward as he plays his chicken game with our system. He is playing a game of chicken and every institution swerves, including the Supreme Court.”

What prompted Jones to come out with such a comment?

On Thursday, February 8, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case seeking to disqualify Donald Trump from the ballot in Colorado due to his actions surrounding the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The lawsuit, invoking the 14th Amendment's Insurrection Clause, argued that the former President of the United States should be disqualified, per a report from The Hill.

However, the justices of the SCOTUS appeared hesitant to make such a watershed decision.

During the two-hour argument, the justices primarily focused on exploring various conjectures that could challenge the arguments presented, without directly probing whether Trump's actions violated the amendment in the US constitution.

Jones claimed the arguments provided Thursday demonstrated that "Trump had a good lawyer."

He said the highest court's reluctance indicated a "foregone conclusion" and is likely "very frustrating for a lot of people."

Jones said on Thursday, “This is a Supreme Court that seems very strong when it’s time to take rights away from women, very strong when it’s time to take diversity programs away from college kids, very, very strong.”

The 55-year-old civil rights advocate continued, “Voting rights away from Americans, very, very strong. But now, it’s time to disenfranchise a disenfranchiser and they’re just looking for the exits.”

“They can come up with an excuse to do whatever they want to, but on this one, they were trying to find any way not to do what I think a normal person looking at this would say,” Jones stated.

He argued that if former President Barack Obama had refused to agree with the results of the presidential election and "sent 10,000 Black Lives Matter people" to prevent Congress from certifying the results, he would have been imprisoned.

The Supreme Court will consider Trump's ballot dispute on an accelerated schedule, which may result in a judgment within weeks.

Internet befuddled with the Supreme Court's Thursday hearing of oral arguments

People on X expressed differing opinions to that of CNN's Van Jones with many Trump supporters rejoicing seeing the pathway to the White House clearing open for their preferred presidential candidate.

One X user remarked: "Wow, van jones finally says something worth listening to."

Another user said: "None of this is a game. We, the people, are not playing. Washington corruption is over. All eyes are on you now."

Another user wrote: "And I agree with van, supreme court can’t be trusted anymore, they are just all corrupt and corrupt."

One user claimed: "No, No, the SCOTUS made the right decision. I’ve been voting for the Dems for all my life and I’ll vote for Joe again in November. If the Colorado decision wasn’t reversed, the rest of the States in this country could’ve been in chaos that could’ve led to Civil War. (Ballot box)"

Another X user remarked: "Neither Trump nor the Supreme Court got in a car intending to drive towards the other, it’s entirely the DNC and DNC donators playing chicken with both, separately. Van Jones has always been a partisan hack."

Finally, this user tweeted: "A game of chicken? What an idiot!!"
