Internet slams Nikki Haley for 'advocating war at home' for suggesting Texas has right to secede from US
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Republican White House hopeful Nikki Haley has argued that Texas has the right to secede from the United States of America, reported the New York Post.
The former South Carolina Governor made the remarks during a conversation with Charlamagne Tha God on his 'Breakfast Club' show on Wednesday, January 31, when the host asked about her thoughts on the Lone Star State seceding from the federal union in light of its standoff with Biden administration on border security.
"I think states have the right to make the decisions that their people want to make. If Texas decides they want to do that. They can do that," Haley responded.
"If that whole state says, 'We don't want to be part of America anymore' — I mean, that's their decision to make. But I don't think government needs to tell people how to live, how to do anything. I mean, I think that we need to let freedom live," she added.
Texas went into conflict with the national government when the SCOTUS ruled in favor of the Biden Administration, ordering the removal of razor wires installed by Governor Greg Abbott across a migrant crossing point.
Nikki Haley downplays chances of Texas seceding from the US
Despite claiming that Texas could become an independent nation, Haley added that the state would not take such measures.
"I think, you know, states are going to make decisions. But let's talk about what's reality. Texas isn't going to secede. That's not something that they're going to do," the former UN ambassador said.
She also defended Texas Governor Abbott's efforts to prevent the surging number of illegal migrant crossings through the US-MEXICO border.
"He has to protect Texans," Haley stated.
According to a 2022 report by The Texas Tribune, the Lone Star State cannot legally secede from the US. The Texas vs White case in 1869 ruled, "States do not have the right to unilaterally secede from the United States, so the Confederate states during the Civil War always remained part of the nation," which prevents any such move from the state.
Haley, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump's sole opponent in the party primary, made the latest claims a month after her Civil War controversy. In December 2023, she drew flak for omitting slavery as a cause of the Civil War.
