'Into the Woods' actor Gavin Creel dies at 48, months after being diagnosed with rare disease
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Actor Gavin Creel has died at age 48 due to cancer disease.
Among the most recognized faces on Broadway, Creel passed away in Manhattan on Monday, September 30.
The Tony Award-winning star was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma and was receiving treatment at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering for metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.
Later, he was transitioned to hospice care at his home after receiving the treatment.
The news of his death was confirmed by his partner Alex Temple Ward, per Deadline.
Gavin Creel opened up on his homosexuality
Gavin Creel came out as gay when he was 25, and his Broadway career was on the rise.
“I didn’t do bible study, or anything that strict, but we were raised that we were in dialog with God. My parents would dump me at Sunday school, where I would read stories that left me thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m f****d. I can’t be gay, even though I want to look at those boys, and God is a man in a pulpit telling me that homosexuality is a sin and those people go to hell,’” he told Daily Beast last year.
“Today that sounds like a cliche, but that was the foundation of my existence. Now, I think the joy and beauty and opportunity I have in my life has come about by being honest and authentic,” he added.
Creed had a phenomenal acting career with power performances in 'La Cage aux Folles' (2004), 'She Loves Me' (2016), 'Waitress' (2019), 'Into the Woods' (2022), and several others. His small screen’s successful run include 'American Horror Story' and 'Central Park'.
