NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Joy Behar and her 'The View' co-hosts were in the studio when an emergency earthquake alert was sent out to New York City residents on Friday, April 5.

Behar opened the episode by joking, "It looks like we're alive! We're alive and live from New York, where we just had a 4.8 earthquake," referring to the rare seismic event felt in NYC, New Jersey, Virginia, and Philadelphia.

Subsequently, Behar asked the audience, "Did you all feel it?'' to which some replied "Yes" and some replied "No." This led Alyssa Farah Griffin to quip, "It's like half and half!"

Sara Haines was about to speak when the panel's cell phones began to buzz loudly, signaling that people should "remain indoors" and only contact 911 if they were seriously hurt. The television program paused as Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro snatched up their phones.

Behar then handed her phone to Sara and said, "Stop it! Put an end to it!" As mother-of-three Haines attempted to close all of the tabs on Behar's phone, she said, ''Jeez, how many things do you have open?"

Navarro then put her head in her hands as she admitted, "You need some tequila now! This is too much for me!" and Hostin replied, "Aren't you happy you don't live in New York now?"

"My dog started barking and running down the hallway like, 'Mom the earth is shaking, get your a** up and run with me,'" remarked Navarro as the ladies continued to describe where they were at the time of the earthquake.

Hostin then said, "Our offices are right next door to each other and I was listening to Beyonce and 'Jolene' and talking to my fabulous hair and makeup team and I didn't feel a thing."

Navarro fired back sarcastically, "Well honey, maybe because you have no feelings?" as the live studio audience reacted to her swipe. Hostin retorted, "It could be that, or it could be because my room is anointed and protected and covered."

Subsequently, Behar revealed, "This is the third earthquake I've been in. First was in LA, the second one I was in The Bronx in bed with my husband and I said to him, 'I felt the earth shake under me, was it you or was it the earthquake?'" which had her co-hosts in fits of laughter before she jokingly added, "But I gave him a 4.8!"

New Yorkers were notified about possible aftershocks of the 4.8 magnitude earthquake

The emergency alert was sent out almost an hour after an unexpected earthquake hit the Northeast a little before 10.30 am. The alert said, "4.7 magnitude earthquake has occurred in the NYC area. Residents are advised to remain indoors and to call 911 if injured," as per Daily Mail

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located close to Lebanon, New Jersey. A link to an article with safety advice for in the event of an earthquake was included in the alert.

Subsequently, a follow-up emergency alert was sent out at 11.46 am, updating New Yorkers on what to expect. "Aftershocks may be felt. New Yorkers can continue usual activities," said the alert.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams noted, "All of us have felt in some way or another the earthquake that hit our city around 10.23 am, we felt the impact of this 4.7 magnitude earthquake."

He added, "This is a developing situation, we are always concerned about aftershocks after an earthquake. First responders are working to make sure the city is safe. Earthquakes don't happen every day in New York so this can be extremely traumatic."

He concluded, "Our preliminary reports do not indicate major life safety or infrastructure issues from the earthquake. We are performing thorough inspections of critical areas. I encourage New Yorkers to check on their loved ones to see that they are fine. Not only for the infrastructure situation but because this can be extremely traumatic."

Internet reacts to 'The View' co-hosts remarks on the unexpected NYC earthquake

One wrote, "I was on a step ladder and felt it shake sometime around 10:00 or a little after and thought it was my imagination 25 mi south of Albany."

Another expressed, "Live in CA. you don’t know what earthquakes are about," while a person remarked, "All amateurs!"

Someone else opined, "A more classless bunch of 'women' I've never seen. You joke about an earthquake after Taiwan just had a 7.4 that killed 9 people. And y'all come out joking we're alive and live in New York. Y'all should all be fired. That what would happen if it were a conservative. God help us."

"That's not an earthquake that's just a tiny rumble you wimps," exclaimed an individual.
