WASHINGTON, DC: Former GOP Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday, July 30, cast doubt on Republicans' willingness to pursue accountability against former NIH director Dr Anthony Fauci, declaring that the party would "never hold Fauci accountable" despite an ongoing Senate effort to hold him in contempt of Congress.

Greene's remarks came a day after Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a Republican-led Senate hearing on the government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul has since announced plans to hold a committee vote next week on a resolution seeking to find Fauci in contempt of Congress.

Marjorie Taylor Greene says Anthony Fauci accountability effort is 'all a show'

In a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter), Greene first reflected on her time serving on the Republican-led Covid Select Committee, before claiming that the party would never hold Fauci or major pharmaceutical companies accountable.

"I served on the Covid Select Committee on Oversight under Republican leadership. It was one of most frustrating experiences," the Georgia politician wrote, adding that she believed she was the committee's only unvaccinated Republican member.

She went on to argue, "Republicans will never hold Fauci accountable, nor Big Pharma or anyone else, for all the horrific crimes done against the American people during Covid. It's all a show."

Greene also linked her criticism to President Donald Trump's recent comments about former President Joe Biden's pre-emptive pardon of Fauci. "Just like Trump mocking Joe Biden with the autopen. Trump will never undo any of Biden's pardons because he knows he needs to use them later for family and staff, and likely himself," she wrote.

Greene further argued that most Republicans supported Covid-19 vaccines and accused members of Congress of refusing to take politically difficult actions, writing that "nothing ever changes" because lawmakers "refuse to do anything courageous."

Senate Republicans move toward contempt vote

Greene's comments come as Senate Republicans continue pursuing legal avenues following Fauci's appearance before the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where he declined to answer questions by repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment on the advice of counsel.

Paul warned Fauci during the hearing that "there will be repercussions" for refusing to answer questions and announced the committee would vote next week on whether to hold the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director in contempt of Congress.

Lawmakers argue Fauci's 2025 pardon from Biden weakens his claim that answering questions about his official conduct could expose him to federal prosecution. However, Biden's pardon applies only to federal offenses committed between 2014 and January 2025 and does not shield Fauci from any alleged crimes committed afterward.

That means any false statements made under oath during the Senate hearing could still expose him to potential perjury charges if prosecutors determine he knowingly lied. Fauci has maintained that it is because of those potential legal risks that his attorneys advised him to invoke the Fifth Amendment and decline to answer questions.
