WASHINGTON, DC: Former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr Anthony Fauci returned to Capitol Hill this week for a contentious Senate hearing that reignited long-running Republican criticism of the US government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The hearing, led by Chairman Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), centered on allegations that Fauci misled Congress about Covid-19's origins, government-funded research, pandemic policies and federal recordkeeping. Fauci has denied wrongdoing and argued that the investigation is designed to support efforts to prosecute him.

Republicans accuse Anthony Fauci of misleading public on Covid's origins

Republicans have argued that Fauci misled Congress and the American public about the origins of Covid-19, particularly over whether US-funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology could have contributed to the outbreak.

The allegation centers on National Institutes of Health grants that supported research involving coronaviruses in China and whether that work constituted gain-of-function research, which involves modifying viruses to better understand how they evolve and spread.

Paul repeatedly argued Fauci sought to steer public opinion toward a natural-origin theory while minimizing the possibility of a laboratory accident. The senator released what he titled 'Tony’s Diary', consisting of 1,114 pages of Fauci's pandemic diary entries from December 2019 through December 2022, arguing the documents reveal inconsistencies between Fauci's private discussions and his public statements.

Fauci has consistently denied funding research that caused the pandemic or misleading Congress, maintaining that the scientific evidence available at the time supported a natural-origin hypothesis while remaining open to further investigation.

Lockdowns, diary entries and recordkeeping fuel broader scrutiny

Republicans also questioned Fauci over pandemic restrictions, pointing to diary entries they say contradict his later public comments. GOP lawmakers cited notes indicating Fauci advised then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to close schools, bars and restaurants, despite later saying he did not recommend nationwide lockdowns.

Other allegations raised during the hearing included claims that Fauci directed federal staff to pursue cash awards on his behalf and improperly handled government records.

Senator Josh Hawley accused Fauci of using government resources to seek more than $1 million in prize awards, while Paul has alleged newly obtained records suggest federal documents were deleted or concealed during congressional investigations.

Democrats allege hearing is politically motivated

Republican lawmakers argue the hearing is intended to determine whether senior public health officials misled Congress, concealed information about Covid-19's origins or exceeded their authority while shaping pandemic policy.

Fauci, however, argued the inquiry was politically motivated, accusing Paul of trying to build a criminal case against him. "The only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up behind bars," Fauci said.

Ranking Member Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) also rejected the claims against Fauci, calling the proceedings "a culmination of bias" that sought to reinforce conclusions Republicans had already reached rather than conduct impartial oversight.

The hearing could also have legal consequences. Paul has said the committee will vote on whether to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after he repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment, arguing his refusal to answer questions obstructed the investigation.
