'It's been crazy': 'Suits' Star Abigail Spencer opens up on legal drama's return to the spotlight

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a surprising turn of events, the legal drama 'Suits' has been witnessing an unexpected resurgence in its popularity.

Speaking to ET, Abigail Spencer who played the role of Dana J Scott in the hit show, expressed her excitement about the renaissance of the series over the summer.

As per Nielsen's report in July, 'Suits' which originally aired between 2011 and 2019 on the USA Network secured an impressive 3.14 billion minutes of watch time from June 26 to July 2.

The new record surpassed the previous record held by 'Manifest', the supernatural drama which had 2.49 billion watch minutes from June 14 to June 20, 2021. 

While 'Suits' dominated the acquired series list, it also claimed the top position on the overall streaming list.

Other popular shows such as 'The Witcher' and 'The Bear' trailed behind with 1.31 billion and 1.01 billion minutes of watch time, respectively.

Spencer told the outlet that she was taken back by surprise when she learned about the streaming milestone while in Europe.

"I was actually in Europe at the time, and I was walking around, and all of a sudden, everyone knew my first and last name," Spencer recalled.

"And I was like, what, what is going on? And so then I was on a text chain with the cast, and they were like, 'We're the number one show in the world.' And also, it was during the strike, so we couldn't talk about it," she said.

"We couldn't promote the show. And it was really interesting how this new wave of streaming and shows can come back around again. It's been crazy," Spencer added.

Abigail Spencer opens up about her role in 'Suits'

Spencer, who portrayed Dana J Scott in several episodes, talked about the circumstances that led to her involvement in the series as a former senior partner at Pearson Specter and lead Harvey Specter's girlfriend on the show.

"The role was actually created for me, and I hadn't seen the show; it was already being shot," said Spencer.

"And so the casting director sent me the pilot and said, 'Just watch it,' because I wasn't sure if I could do it or not."

And when I saw it, I was like, I literally called my agent. I said, 'I think this is Mad Men for lawyers, like I think there's something really special here.'"

"So, you know, great they found it now," she explained.
