LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jake Paul is taking a risky step to take USA boxing to the Olympics.

The 27-year-old announced his plan to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, driven by his frustration with Team USA’s recent performance in the ring.

Jake Paul’s journey from social media to Olympic aspirations

Jake Paul, 27, who has become well-known as a professional boxer and social media star, disclosed his plan on his 'BS W/ Jake Paul' podcast on Friday, August 9.

Jake Paul, who began his professional boxing career in 2018, has become a controversial figure in the sports world.

Jake Paul first gained attention in the boxing world with his amateur debut victory over Deji Olatunji. Turning professional in 2020, Paul quickly made a name for himself with a series of notable wins.

Throughout his career, Paul has defeated several UFC stars, including Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz.

He has suffered his first and only professional loss to Tommy Fury in early 2023.

In November, Paul is set to face retired boxing legend Mike Tyson. The fight was initially scheduled for July 20 but was postponed due to Tyson's medical concerns.

Determined to keep fighting, Paul instead faced bare-knuckle boxer Mike Perry on the original date, winning by TKO in the sixth round and improving his record to 10-1, reported Mirror.

Jake Paul’s decision to extend his career for Olympic gold

The 10-1 fighter has not only been competing in the ring but also worked with USA Boxing leading up to the Paris Games, assisting athletes with branding and meditation at its headquarters.

Now, he’s ready to take matters into his own hands. "I'm going to enter the 2028 Olympics for boxing in Los Angeles," Paul said during the podcast. "I'm sick and tired of waiting around, waiting for another gold for Team USA," he added, according to TMZ.

Initially, Jake Paul had planned to retire from boxing before the 2028 Olympics, but his desire to represent his country on home soil changed his plans.

He acknowledged that aiming for the Olympics would extend his career by a few years, but he felt it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

Paul’s ambition to compete in the Olympics might have been impossible just a few years ago, as only amateur boxers were allowed to participate in the Games before 2016.

However, with the inclusion of professional boxers since the Rio Olympics, Paul sees a clear path to Olympic glory. "Gold medal, you're mine, brother," Jake Paul said.

Internet questions Jake Paul’s Olympic plans

Jake Paul’s Olympic aspirations have generated buzz, with many on the Internet being skeptical about his chances of success.

On social media platforms like YouTube and X, users have expressed doubt and raised questions about the challenges Paul will face.

"If he's going to join the Olympics, does he have to qualify? Like going against other boxers in the US?" asked one user in a YouTube comment.

Others questioned how a professional boxer like Paul could compete in the Olympics, given the sport’s traditional focus on amateur athletes.

"How can a pro boxer box in the Olympics? I know basketball lets pro's play but I thought boxing had amateurs only," another user commented.

Critics also pointed out that Paul’s success in the ring has largely come against older MMA fighters or lesser-known boxers.

"Does he not realize he will have to fight actual boxers and not retired MMA fighters???" mocked another user on X.

Some even predicted that Paul would struggle against more experienced and well-established opponents.

"Except he’d have to fight real boxers at his actual weight class and he can’t do steroids," one user wrote. Another added, "He's gonna get embarrassed too."
