WASHINGTON, DC: John F Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, ripped House Republicans' plan to rename the Kennedy Center’s famed Opera House after first lady Melania Trump.

He also took a jab at President Donald Trump and said that the POTUS is obsessed with being bigger than his grandfather. Rep Mike Simpson has led the effort to rename the opera house after the first lady, and could see a House vote as soon as this fall.

Jack Schlossberg rips plan to rename Opera House after Melania

The former president's grandson took to Instagram to rip the Republicans and President Trump.

Quoting his grandfather, Jack Schlossberg wrote, "A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces — but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers."

He then added, "JFK believed the arts made our country great and could be our most effective weapon in the fight for civil rights and against authoritarian governments around the world."

"The Trump Administration stands for freedom of oppression, not expression. He uses his awesome powers to suppress free expression and instill fear. But this isn’t about the arts," Schlossberg wrote.

He also mentioned, "Trump is obsessed with being bigger than JFK, with minimizing the many heroes of our past, as if that elevates him. It doesn’t."

"But there’s hope — art lasts forever, and no one can change what JFK and our shared history stands for," Schlossberg concluded his post.

Interestingly, Schlossberg’s post comes after House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to the interior, environment, and related agencies annual spending bill on Tuesday, July 22, that would rename the opera house in the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts the "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House."

The move comes after Trump, accusing the Kennedy Center of being too "woke", overhauled its board in February and named himself its chair.

However, Schlossberg said that the potential name change to the prominent institution’s Opera House was not "about the arts".

Meanwhile, Mike Simpson informed the Daily Mail in a statement that he wanted to honor Melania Trump.

However, it is unclear if the move was coordinated with the White House or the Kennedy Center.

"First Lady Melania Trump serves as the Honorary Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center. Naming a theater after her is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts," Simpson stated.

A person also mentioned, "OMG! No way! I’m so sorry you and your family are dealing with this mess Jack. I hope you know how proud your grandparents are of you," whereas one added, "Of all the things he has done, of which there have been many, this is one of the most aggregious. I cannot understate enough how much I detest this man and this administration."
