Jake Reiner speaks out on brother’s alleged role in Brentwood double murder case
LOS ANGELES, CA: Jake Reiner, the 34-year-old son of legendary director and activist Rob Reiner, has broken his silence on the "sensational" double murder that shattered his family in late 2025.
In a vulnerable Substack essay published Friday, April 24, Jake described the visceral anguish of losing more than half of his family "in the most violent way imaginable," while addressing the harrowing reality of his brother, Nick Reiner, being at the "center" of the tragedy.
The slayings, which occurred in the couple’s Brentwood home, have sent a "red flag" through the Hollywood community, marking the violent end of a 35-year marriage.
Rob Reiner, the filmmaker behind classics like When Harry Met Sally, and his wife Michele, were found stabbed to death in December.
Just one day later, Nick Reiner was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
The 32-year-old, who has a documented history of drug addiction and a diagnosis of schizophrenia, has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held at LA’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility without bail.
Brother at center of violent slayings
Jake’s essay marks the first time a family member has explicitly addressed Nick's involvement in the homicides.
"Nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it," Jake wrote, calling the situation "impossible to process."
While acknowledging the public’s "discovery" of the details, Jake insisted that certain parts of the tragedy must remain private to protect what little remains of their family unit.
The "strategic disarray" of the Reiner family’s private life came to a head in the years leading up to the murders, as Nick publicly struggled with his mental health.
Jake noted that while some answers regarding the motive and the events of that night will come in time, the priority now is protecting the surviving siblings from further emotional exploitation by the media.
Living nightmare began at Union Station
In a devastating sequence, Jake recounted the exact moment he learned of the deaths.
He was attending a celebration of life for a close friend at Union Station when his sister, Romy, called with the news that their father was dead. Minutes later, a second call confirmed that their mother had also been killed.
"Nothing can prepare you for that living nightmare," he wrote, reflecting on the "maximum pressure" of losing both best friends and parents instantly.
Jake expressed a profound sense of fear for what his parents experienced in their final moments.
He wrote that Rob and Michele "should be enjoying the rest of their lives peacefully while growing older together."
Instead, that "prosperous future" was "ripped away" in a violent transaction that neither Jake nor Romy could stop.
The siblings had previously issued a joint statement describing their parents as their "best friends," notably omitting any mention of Nick at that time.
Mental health struggles precede Brentwood tragedy
The circumstances surrounding the Brentwood incident are tied to Nick Reiner’s documented history of schizophrenia and substance abuse, issues that had previously been referenced publicly by filmmaker Rob Reiner in the context of broader mental health advocacy.
The case has drawn renewed attention to how state systems manage individuals with severe mental health conditions, particularly those considered high-risk.
Nick Reiner had, in earlier years, collaborated creatively with his father, with those efforts viewed by some as part of an attempt to stabilize personal and family dynamics.
However, investigators say those circumstances shifted dramatically following the stabbing incident that turned the family’s Brentwood residence into an active crime scene.
Nick Reiner remains in custody and is awaiting trial. Legal proceedings are expected to draw significant attention in Los Angeles, given the profile of the family and the nature of the allegations.
Family members Jake and Romy Reiner have not publicly detailed their next steps but are understood to be focusing on personal recovery in the aftermath of the incident.
