Nick Reiner pushes back against charges, enters 'not guilty' plea in parents' killing case
LOS ANGELES, CA: Nick Reiner, 32, entered a plea of not guilty on Monday, February 23, during a court appearance in Los Angeles regarding the killing of his parents, famed director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The plea was entered by his public defender, Kimberly Greene, on behalf of the defendant.
The charges stemmed from the fatal stabbings of the couple at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles in December 2025.
Nick Reiner, the third of Rob Reiner’s four children, has been charged with two counts of first-degree homicide.
The deaths of Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, have sent shockwaves through the Hollywood community, where Rob was celebrated for his iconic roles and legendary directorial career.
Prosecution weighs potential death penalty charges
Following the medical examiner’s report, which concluded that the couple died from "multiple sharp force injuries," the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office expressed strong confidence in the case.
DA Nathan Hochman stated that he believes a jury will ultimately convict Reiner of the crimes.
If convicted on both counts of first-degree homicide, Reiner faces the possibility of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
As of Monday’s plea hearing, prosecutors have not yet officially announced whether they intend to pursue the death penalty in this high-profile matter. Reiner has been held without bail since his initial arrest following the discovery of his parents’ bodies.
Unexpected defense shakeup complicates legal proceedings
The case has been marked by a sudden change in Reiner’s legal representation.
Originally, Reiner was represented by attorney Alan Jackson, known for his high-profile defense of Karen Read. However, Jackson unexpectedly withdrew from the case during a scheduled arraignment in January, citing "circumstances beyond our control."
While Jackson claimed that he was legally prohibited from elaborating on the withdrawal, he maintained outside the courthouse that Reiner was not guilty of homicide under California law.
Following Jackson's departure, public defender Kimberly Greene was appointed to the case to represent the 32-year-old. The transition has added a layer of complexity to the proceedings as the defense prepares for trial.
Hollywood mourns the loss of legends
The tragedy has left the film industry grieving for Rob Reiner.
Known for starring in 'All in the Family', Reiner transitioned into a prolific director, helming beloved classics such as 'When Harry Met Sally', 'The Princess Bride', and 'This Is Spinal Tap'.
His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was also a well-known figure in their creative circles.
