Jake Reiner steps into 'paternalistic' role as family grapples with Rob and Michele's deaths
BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Jake Reiner has emerged as a key support figure for his family following the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, earlier this month.
The couple were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, and their son Nick Reiner was later arrested and charged in connection with the killings.
As the family marks its first Christmas without the couple, relatives have gathered privately to grieve and support one another. New reporting has also challenged earlier claims of a family altercation shortly before the deaths.
Family gathers privately as Jake Reiner takes on caretaker role
According to reporting by the Daily Mail, Jake Reiner, the eldest of the three siblings, has taken on a stabilizing role as the family navigates the aftermath of the deaths.
An unnamed source told the outlet, “Jake has had to step into a paternalistic role,” adding that his guiding principle has been "family first," a value the source said Rob and Michele Reiner emphasized throughout their lives.
Jake, 34, and his sister Romy Reiner, who discovered their parents' bodies are spending the holiday period at a private beach house location, joined by extended family members and partners.
Those present reportedly include Michele Reiner's sisters Suzanne and Martine, Romy's boyfriend Alex Silberberg and Jake's partner Maria Gilfillan.
“They are sheltering from the storm – both literally and emotionally,” the source said. “They all felt it was really important to come together as a family for the festive week and to mark Romy’s birthday, however subdued the celebrations."
Reports dispute claims of confrontation before deaths
Claims that Rob Reiner and his son Nick Reiner were involved in a heated argument shortly before the killings, have also been pushed back.
A Hollywood executive who attended a December 13 Christmas party hosted by Conan O'Brien told The Wrap that reports of a major confrontation were inaccurate.
The executive described accounts of blowout as "bull***t," stating, “If there had been a big fight with the Reiners, there were a million people there I knew. No one mentioned it to me.”
According to the source, O'Brien also denied witnessing any argument at the event. “I said to Conan the next day – I said, ‘What is all this stuff about a fight?’ He said, 'I saw no fight,'” the attendee said.
Nick Reiner, 32, who authorities say was taken into custody on the night of December 14, remains jailed and is facing double murder charges. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
