James Carville warns Trump of 'giant trap', says ex-POTUS made 'big mistake' by agreeing to debate Harris
WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic strategist James Carville has warned that former president Donald Trump may have made a "big mistake" by agreeing to debate Vice President Kamala Harris.
The debate, set to take place on Tuesday night, September 10, will be the first and possibly the only time the two candidates will face off during the current election cycle.
Did Donald Trump make a 'big mistake' by agreeing to debate Kamala Harris?
James Carville warned that Donald Trump may be unprepared to debate Kamala Harris, potentially walking into a trap. Although both campaigns are open to more debates, none are scheduled.
"I think Trump is walking into a giant trap," Carville said in an interview with NBC News.
"I think she’s well-prepared. She’s been in Pittsburgh. She’s got really top people preparing her," he added, according to The Hill.
Carville pointed out that expectations for Harris have been lowered since President Joe Biden’s "horrible" debate performance in June.
He noted that Biden's lackluster showing had more to do with his own struggles rather than Trump's success.
"It wasn’t that Trump did great. It was that Biden didn’t do very well at all," Carville added in the interview.
James Carville says Kamala Harris will perform 'quite well' in debate
The Democratic strategist expressed confidence in Kamala Harris' preparation, predicting that she will perform strongly during the debate.
"I could be eating my words on Wednesday, but I think she’s going to do quite well," Carville said.
"And I think he made a big mistake by accepting this debate," he added. He also stressed the importance of the debate for the American public.
The debate "night is very critical. I think it’s a lot about Vice President Harris," he said
Carville added that Trump should be ready for a serious challenge, noting, "She’s coming with her A game. And I don’t know what’s going on in Trump world, but he better tighten his chin strap."
Will Kamala Harris turn the tables on Donald Trump?
James Carville didn’t shy away from praising Kamala Harris' ability to explain her policies, stating that she will make a strong case during the debate.
"She’s gonna explain herself, and I think she’ll do quite well," he said in his Monday interview.
The strategist concluded by sharing his optimism regarding the vice president’s performance.
"I’m hearing good things out of Pittsburgh," further indicating that Harris has been preparing with top advisors.
The much-anticipated debate between Harris and Trump will air at 9 pm on ABC News, with simulcasts available on other networks like NewsNation.
