James Van Der Beek says cancer has brought 'so many ups and downs and unknowns'
During his July 30 appearance on the third hour of 'Today,' James Van Der Beek described how much cancer has reshaped his daily life.
Van Der Beek revealed in November 2024 his "shock" diagnosis.
“I’m feeling great,” he said in a recent interview. “It’s been a journey. There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is – I call it a full-time job.”

Eight months after revealing his stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis, the 48-year-old actor spoke about prioritizing rest and making changes to his lifestyle.
Van Der Beek has taken up yoga, frequent stretching, and a keto diet to support his recovery.
He said the process of slowing down has brought clarity. “The beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job,” Van Der Beek said.

James Van Der Beek urges early screenings after missing cancer guideline update
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, following lung and breast cancer. Doctors warn that symptoms often appear only after the disease has spread, making routine screenings essential.

James Van Der Beek expressed regret over missing the recommended age for screening. “I got screened at 46,” he said. “I didn’t realize they had dropped it to 45. I thought I was way ahead of the game.”
He also encouraged people to take even minor changes seriously. “Even just the slightest little change, it could be something,” he said. “Don’t think that not having symptoms means you don’t have to get screened, especially for something that is this curable when caught early.”
Despite being in peak physical condition, the diagnosis came as a surprise. “I ate as well as I could. I was healthy. I was in amazing cardiovascular shape,” said James Van Der Beek. “There was no reason in my mind that I should have gotten a positive diagnosis.”
