WASHINGTON, DC: US Representative Jasmine Crockett was visibly moved during a heartfelt moment on Saturday, April 18, as MSNBC host Katie Phang praised the Democratic lawmaker and thanked her for her continued support of “democracy.”

The emotional exchange came amid news that Phang’s show, which had aired on MSNBC since 2022, had been canceled.

Following the emotional exchange during the interview, Crockett sparked backlash on social media by making a controversial comparison, claiming that Trump was worse than an MS-13 member.

During an emotional appearance on MSNBC, Rep Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), was visibly moved after host Katie Phang praised her unwavering dedication to democratic values. The moment came after Phang aired a clip from an earlier interview with Crockett from three years ago.

"Congresswoman, I wanted to thank you for always getting up and early and delivering it," Phang said. "But I also want to say thank you for your continuing support for democracy. It’s definitely something that you have made your brand, and it’s the integrity that you’re bringing, and I’m grateful for you always."

Crockett grew emotional and responded, “We’ll miss you.” As Phang also began to choke up, she added, “You can’t have me crying at the beginning of a show. Jasmine. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, you’re not... You haven’t seen the last of me. Thank you for being here and getting us started today. I always appreciate you."

Phang, whose show has aired on MSNBC since 2022, previously addressed its cancellation in a statement on X in February. The network is undergoing a major shakeup, which also includes the cancellation of Joy Reid’s program.

One user wrote, "So ridiculous. She's a joke"

An X user shared, "The only thing Crockett supports is her own interests."

A person mocked, "😅😂🤣 When Cockett's term is finished, she should look to Television for a new dramatic career. (those aren't tears of sadness...she's got a rogue eyelash irritation)"

A user dubbed, "Pathetic."

Someone else questioned, "Does she support democracy or the destruction of our country?"

One individual explained, "She’s not “tearing up” she has an overactive tear duct in her lazy eye."

Jasmine Crockett made controversial comparison involving President Trump

Shortly after the emotional exchange, the interview took a sharp turn when Jasmine Crockett made a controversial comparison that sparked backlash online. Referring to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old undocumented immigrant recently deported to El Salvador’s high-security "Terrorism Confinement Center" (CECOT) — Crockett claimed he was “a lot less criminal” than President Donald Trump.

"If Senator Van Hollen can get down there, if the president can get up here and get to the White House, then I don’t understand why we can’t get Abrego up out of there," Crockett said.

Abrego Garcia, who had been living in Maryland, was deported last month in what officials initially admitted was an administrative error. However, some Trump-era officials have since claimed the deportation was justified, alleging Abrego has ties to the notorious MS-13 gang.

Crockett pushed back on that assertion: "I mean, we know that they admitted that they were wrong. Now they’re trying to double back and say, well, he’s this terrible person and all this kind of stuff. But here’s the reality. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a lot less criminal than the person that’s sitting in the White House, because last time I checked, he doesn’t have any criminal convictions."
