The infamous 2014 elevator incident occurred after a Met Gala afterparty at The Standard, High Line in New York City on May 5. Surveillance footage captured Solange Knowles engaging in a heated argument with Jay-Z, with Beyonce witnessing the altercation. In the video, Solange can be seen yelling at Jay-Z and physically attacking him by hitting and kicking, as a security guard intervened to restrain her.
At one point, Beyonce stepped between her husband and sister in an apparent attempt to diffuse the situation. The footage, leaked and released by TMZ on May 12, quickly went viral, sparking widespread speculation and discussion.
While the three have never fully explained the altercation, Jay-Z addressed it during a 2017 interview, describing it as a rare disagreement.
“That’s my sister. Not my sister-in-law, no, my sister. Period,” he said.
An insider shared with People that Solange's outburst was triggered by an earlier confrontation with fashion designer Rachel Roy.
"Toward the end of the night, Jay said something inappropriate to Beyonce and Solange, and (Solange) snapped," the insider revealed. "When they got in the elevator, it escalated quickly the way family tensions can. It got exceptionally heated the way family moments can."
The source further noted, "Solange is super protective of Beyonce."
Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Solange Knowles' elevator fight addressed in viral statement
Following the public leak of the footage, Beyonce, Jay-Z and Solange Knowles addressed the incident in a joint statement on May 15, 2014. “The most important thing is that our family has worked through it,” they stated via the Associated Press.
Acknowledging shared responsibility, they added, “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other, and we have moved forward as a united family."
The statement continued, "At the end of the day, families have problems, and we're no different. We love each other, and above all, we are family. We've put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same."
Months later, Solange spoke briefly about the incident in an August 2014 Lucky magazine interview, saying, “What’s important is that my family and I are all good… We all feel at peace with that.”
The renewed attention on the video coincides with a lawsuit filed recently naming Jay-Z and Sean 'Diddy' Combs as defendants. Filed on December 8, 2024, by attorney Tony Buzbee, the lawsuit accuses the artists of assaulting the plaintiff, named as "Jane Doe", in 2000.
Jay-Z has refuted the claims, stating that the attorney is seeking to pressure him into paying a substantial sum of money through extortion.
