WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance has recounted the tense and confusing moments when he was abruptly rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner after a suspected gunman breached security.

The high-profile event quickly descended into chaos, prompting Secret Service agents to evacuate top officials, including President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

In an interview on 'The Will Cain Show', Vance described how the situation unfolded rapidly, leaving many in the room unsure of what was happening as security personnel moved decisively to secure the area.

Vance said he was seated on the dais alongside journalists and senior officials at the Washington Hilton when the disturbance began. He recalled hearing loud noises that he could not immediately identify, followed by visible panic among attendees seated across the ballroom.

"I really didn't know what was going on," Vance said, explaining that the atmosphere shifted within seconds.

"Just to give you my perspective, I'm sitting up there on the dais with some journalists and obviously with the president of the United States, a few seats to my right, and there's a lot of commotion," he added.

As confusion spread, Vance said he noticed people ducking under tables in response to activity toward the back of the room. Moments later, a Secret Service agent approached him directly.

"Then an agent comes and whispers in my ear. [He] basically says, 'Sir, we have to leave,'" Vance recounted.

Agents then swiftly escorted Vance, Trump, and Melania Trump out of the venue as part of emergency security protocols.

JD Vance praises Secret Service agents

Vance reflected on the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner shooting, saying the situation was especially distressing for his family as events unfolded in real time.

“Honestly it was tougher for my wife, who was at home with the kids and started hearing things… I really didn’t know what was going on… The first thing that really freaked me out Will was that an agent had been shot,” Vance said.

He explained that the uncertainty inside the ballroom added to the tension, as officials initially struggled to understand the source of the commotion before being evacuated by security.

Vance also praised the response of the United States Secret Service, emphasizing the risks agents take while protecting national leaders.

“What an amazing job the agents and the Secret Service do... They put their lives in harm’s way,” he said.

Suspect and security response

Authorities later identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, who allegedly attempted to breach a Secret Service checkpoint at the dinner while carrying multiple weapons. The incident triggered an immediate lockdown and evacuation of the ballroom, underscoring the heightened security risks surrounding such gatherings.

A Secret Service officer was injured during the confrontation and was taken to a hospital after being struck in the ballistic vest. Officials said the protective gear prevented more serious harm. No other injuries were reported among attendees.

The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner is an annual event attended by political leaders, journalists, and prominent public figures, making the security breach particularly alarming.
