JD Vance says he expected ‘vicious’ treatment on ‘The View’, instead Joy Behar praised him
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday, June 14, said he was surprised by the reception he received during his first appearance on ABC’s ‘The View,’ revealing that co-host Joy Behar complimented him during a commercial break despite their political differences.
Speaking to Fox News’ Vance said he had anticipated a far more hostile encounter with the panel. His remarks came after a series of on-air exchanges with the hosts on issues ranging from race and immigration to President Donald Trump’s policies.
Vance says expectations were ‘defied’ during ‘The View’ appearance
Reflecting on the appearance, Vance said the discussion was less confrontational than he had expected. “Honestly, I expected them to be absolutely vicious, and they were only a little bit vicious. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be,” Vance said.
He then recounted an off-air conversation with Behar during a commercial break. “Joy Behar even said during the break, not joking, she said, you know what? You're like pretty good for a Republican. And I was like, whoa! That is a way better compliment than I expected from Joy Behar.”

Vance also joked that some of his expectations about the panel had not materialized. “I gotta say, I thought that Sunny, the woman to my left, was gonna call me a racist. In reality, it was Whoopi, the woman to my right, who called me a racist. So expectations were defied.”
During the broadcast, Vance sparred with several co-hosts over immigration, inflation and allegations that the Trump administration had altered exhibits related to Black history at museums. One exchange with Whoopi Goldberg focused on those allegations, which Vance disputed.
Before appearing on the View, Vance said that he hoped for a productive conversation despite ideological differences.
“I just fundamentally think that most people, not everybody, but most people, even if I disagree with them, you ought to try to have a conversation with them,” he said. “I hope they meet me halfway. I'm a little skeptical, but we'll see.”
Joy Behar says Vance has a ‘good vibe’
According to Behar, she told the vice president that he should consider running for president in the future because of what she described as his “good vibe.” She elaborated that while she disagrees with Republican policies at the national level, she does not view Vance negatively on a personal level.
“Truthfully, as I said to you at the beginning of this conversation, I don’t think that he’s a bad guy. So if he runs against, say, Gavin Newsom, that would be an interesting debate to see those two because they’re both intelligent.”
At the same time, she maintained criticism of Vance’s defense of Trump, particularly his explanation for previously criticizing the president before joining his administration.
“Don’t give me that. That’s where I draw the line on the guy. Don’t blame me for the fact, you went to Yale law school, you can’t read between the lines? You can’t watch something and discern what’s going on? Come on,” Behar said.
