WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance opened up about the emotional toll the White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting took on his wife, Usha Vance, saying the experience was harder for her as she processed it from home while pregnant.

Speaking on ‘The Will Cain Show’ on Wednesday, April 29, Vance reflected on how the situation created a different kind of fear for his wife, who was not at the scene and had to rely on fragmented updates as events unfolded.

Vance said the ordeal was “tougher” for Usha than for him because she was receiving information in real time through text messages and social media rather than through official or verified updates.

Usha, who is currently pregnant with the couple’s fourth child and was at home with their three children, Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel, experienced growing anxiety as reports of the incident began circulating before details were confirmed.

JD Vance recalls confusion inside WHCD venue

The security incident took place on April 25 at the Washington Hilton, when 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen allegedly attempted to assassinate President Trump during the event.

Vance recalled that inside the ballroom, confusion set in quickly as guests struggled to understand what was happening. He said he initially did not grasp the seriousness of the situation, noting that loud noises and sudden movement created widespread uncertainty.

He added that it became clearer only when people began ducking under tables and reacting toward the back of the ballroom, signaling that something serious was unfolding.

JD Vance describes Secret Service evacuation during WHCD incident

Vance also detailed the moment Secret Service agents moved to evacuate him from the room. He said an agent quietly instructed him to leave before physically guiding him out and escorting him to a secure area.

During the evacuation, Vance said early reports added to the confusion, including claims that an agent may have been shot, which heightened tension in the moment.

He later learned that although an agent was struck in the chest, his protective vest prevented serious injury.

President Trump later confirmed the agent was in “great shape,” while Vance and his family have since shifted focus to preparing for the arrival of their new son in July.
