Jenna Ortega was 'super sweet' to Melissa Barrera after firing from 'Scream' franchise for 'antisemitism'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Melissa Barrera has recounted the “super sweet” gesture of Jenna Ortega when she supported her after the ‘Scream’ franchise sacked her following her alleged “antisemitic” comments on social media.
As the Palestinian War commenced, Barrera shared a post on social media, where she wrote, "Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity, no water,” before adding, "THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.”
However, her post did not sit well with ‘Scream’ producers who later announced that the company has "zero tolerance for antisemitism" and fired Barrera from the franchise.
Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the 'Scream' movies, commented, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech," per Variety.
While the production company fired her, the actress shared that she received a supporting hand from her onscreen sister, Jenna Ortega.
Melissa Barrera shares that Jenna Ortega supported her
Speaking to Screen Rant, Barrera shared that Jenna Ortega was “super sweet” when it all happened.
The 33-year-old star shared, "We talked a lot when it went down. She was checking in on me, and was super sweet. We haven't spoken in a while, but she's busy. She's crazy busy. And she's also not a great texter backer.”
She continued, "So, every time that I text her, I know, eventually, she'll get back to me. And she's just not glued to her phone like some of us are, I am glued to my phone. Which, bless her, good for her."
"But yeah, with her, it's one of those things where no matter if you don't talk for months, when we do call each other, or when we do connect or see each other somewhere, it's like no time has passed," Barrera added.
She concluded by saying, "We go right back to where we left off, so I am always cheering her on and I'm rooting for her, and I will protect her forever with my life."
Melissa Barrera thanked her publicists for standing by her
Following the debacle of her comments and her subsequent firing, Barrera shared that her publicists stood by her during the difficult times.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “It’s definitely hard, because I was just in such a cloudy state of mind, but I was very fortunate."
She continued, “I had a lot of support from the people around me: my team and specifically my publicists — they just carried me.”
