Mike Sorrentino reveals Whoopi Goldberg and Robert Downey Jr confronted him about his addiction
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Mike Sorrentino, also known as The Situation revealed the names of celebrities who helped him with his painkiller addiction, which included 'The View' co-host Whoopi Goldberg and 'Iron Man' actor Robert Downey Jr.
The 41-year-old rose to fame as a party-loving, self-proclaimed 'Guido', on the hit reality TV show 'Jersey Shore', which ran from 2009 to 2012.
In his upcoming memoir, Sorrentino claimed that he was battling addiction when the show ended, and by then had access to an "unlimited supply" of prescription drugs.
Titled 'Reality Check: Making the Best of The Situation', the book is scheduled to hit the shelves on January 2, 2024, according to the New York Post.
How much money did Mike Sorrentino spend on drugs?
When his finances were audited by his lawyers and accountants, Sorrentino mentioned that "they estimated I had spent a staggering $500,000 on drugs, mostly cocaine and oxycodone, during those years."
Describing his time on the set, he wrote, "We consumed hundreds, if not thousands, of pills. Every day, all day. I officially had access to an unlimited supply of Percocet, Vicodin, oxycodone, and Roxicet, not to mention Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin."
“It had all begun by taking a pill here or there just to feel good and experiment, but eventually, the dream turned into a nightmare. I now needed this substance just to not feel violently ill,” he recalled.
Mike Sorrentino was confronted by Whoopi Goldberg and Jay Leno
Sorrentino revealed that his addiction had escalated to a point where fellow stars felt the need to intervene, according to People.
Among them was Goldberg, who "spotted the tell-tale signs of my addiction and tried to call attention to my actions."
“Many times, she graciously reached out to warn me that I was moving too fast. She had a very loving and caring manner about her that I will never forget," he wrote.
Another talk show host who spoke to him in private about the issue was Jay Leno. "A couple of times, Jay pulled me aside after appearances on The Tonight Show. I could see the concern in his face," read the memoir.
“He’d witnessed it before and wanted to straighten me out. ‘You’ve got to make better decisions,’ Jay Leno told me on more than one occasion. He was a super nice guy, and I felt he was looking out for me,” Sorrentino said about the host. He also said that the host told him, “‘You’re never going to last in this business going the way you are.’”
Mike Sorrentino's conversation with Robert Downey Jr
“As someone who had gone through the same addiction issues I was grappling with at the time, he recognized the signs: glasses tipped low, pupils pinpointed, my energy douchebag on blast,” Sorrentino said of his interaction with the 'Iron Man' star, claiming that it “left an impact on me.”
The 'Jersey Shore' star also said, “Ours was a quick run-in, but the pleasantries quickly turned into a serious conversation. I remember he showed concern for my condition and implored me to be careful.”
Sorrentino, who is eight years sober at present, also declared, "During the throes of my drug addiction… I was my own worst enemy. It has always been me versus me. Battling my demons."
"In my younger years, I didn’t know how to control those demons, and too often I lost the battles. But in the past eight years of sobriety, the tides have turned. I refuse to lose the war, though I still fight these battles every day,” he stated.
