WASHINGTON DC: President Joe Biden and scores of Democrats including former US president Barack Obama have praised Kamala Harris's running mate choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Biden, who suddenly ended his own reelection bid roughly two weeks ago on July 21 despite being adamant even after growing calls to give up the race, said Harris made “a great decision” in picking Walz to join the ticket.

Joe Biden says Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will be strongest defenders of democracy

Joe Biden said the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket would work for people and the middle class would be the strongest defenders of freedom and democracy.

“The Harris-Walz ticket will be a powerful voice for working people and America’s great middle class. They will be the strongest defenders of our personal freedoms and our democracy,” Biden said in a statement on X.

“And they will ensure that America continues to lead the world and play its role as the indispensable nation.”

“It’s time for all Democrats — and indeed all Americans — committed to freedom, democracy, and American leadership in the world to rally behind the Harris-Walz ticket,” Biden added. "Every generation of Americans faces a moment where they are asked to defend American democracy. That moment is now."

Obama, who reportedly played an important role along with Emerita Nancy Pelosi in pushing Biden to reconsider his reelection bid, also praised Harris' choice of her running mate.

"Like Vice President Harris, Governor @Tim_Walz believes that government works to serve us," Obama posted on X (formerly Twitter).

"Not just some of us, but all of us. That’s what makes him an outstanding governor, and that’s what will make him an even better vice president. Michelle and I couldn’t be happier for Tim and Gwen, their family, and our country," Obama wrote.

Barack and Michelle Obama praises Tim Walz as Kamala Harris' 'ideal partner'

The statement from Barack and Michelle Obama read, "By selecting Tim Walz to be her vice president from a pool of outstanding Democrats, Kamala Harris has chosen an ideal partner - and made it clear exactly what she stands for."

Former Democratic presidential nominee and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she was “thrilled” with the Walz pick.

“From providing free meals for schoolkids to implementing paid family leave in Minnesota, he’s about doing good in all the ways you can. He’ll be an incredible partner to our first woman president. Let’s go win this,” she wrote on X.

Former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) said Walz is a “great asset” to Harris’ “winning campaign.”

“@Tim_Walz is a great asset to @KamalaHarris’ winning campaign & administration,” Sanders wrote on X.

“He is a former public school teacher, football coach, and strong union supporter. As governor, he delivered for working families in MN. As VP, he will deliver for the working families of the US,” he added.

Internet thanks Joe Biden for sacrificing his reelection bid to let Kamala Harris team up with Tim Walz

Online reactions to the Harris-Walz ticket were mixed. The majority of the Democratic supporters felt happy and thanked Joe Biden for giving up on the reelection bid.

One user wrote on X, "Kamala Harris is winning this election 100% guaranteed."

Another commented in reply to Obama's post about Walz, "He’s a socialist like you."

Positive reactions included one user who wrote, "I love this team #HarrisWalz2024" and another who posted, "Thanks Joe - this wouldn’t have been possible without your sacrifice! Appreciate you so much. Vote Harris/Walz!"

On the contrary, some negative reactions surfaced as well. "This is the most communist, Anti-American ticket in history," one user posted.

Another expressed gratitude to Biden, "Thank you from my heart, for your long-standing, consistently excellent service, to our great country, President Biden. We owe you so much."
