WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden declared he will debate former President Donald Trump ahead of the presidential election this year.

The announcement marks the clearest indication yet of the president's readiness to confront his Republican counterpart in the debate before voters head to the polls in November, according to the Associated Press.

Joe Biden says he's not aware of the format or timing of the debates

During an interview with Howard Stern, Biden revealed his willingness to debate Trump. However, he shared that he does not know the format or timing of the debates.

“I am, somewhere. I don’t know when. I’m happy to debate him,” Biden told Stern when he was asked if he planned to debate the former president.

Biden previously noted that his participation in a head-to-head showdown would hinge upon Trump's conduct.

His latest statement has now dispelled any ambiguity surrounding his readiness to debate his Republican opponent.

News organizations requested Joe Biden and Donald Trump to participate in televised debates

Weeks before Biden's announcement, several leading news organizations including CBS News, CNN, Fox News, ABC News, NBC News, The Associated Press, PBS NewsHour, NPR, NewsNation, USA Today, and others, penned an open letter to both Biden and Trump.

The news organizations urged the presidential candidates "to publicly commit to participating in general election debates before November’s election."

Three presidential debates have already been scheduled by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

The debates will be taking place in September and October in Utah, Texas, and Virginia.

In 2022, the Republican National Committee voted unanimously to withdraw from the Commission on Presidential Debates.

In February, Biden responded to the former president's challenge to debate as he told reporters, "If I were him, I’d want him to debate me, too. He’s got nothing else to do.”

After his announcement on Stern’s show on Friday, April 26, Trump’s campaign manager Chris LaCivita took to social media to respond to the invite.

“Ok, let’s set it up!” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter)

Internet reacts to Joe Biden's readiness to debate Donald Trump

As Biden announced he was happy to debate Trump, netizens weighed in on the president's announcement.

"Never going to happen, what he says and what they allow him to do are two different things. They will come up with excuse after excuse to avoid any real debate," a user opined.

One user wrote, "I put the odds of this actually happening at 50/50," while another commented, "Its gonna be a bloodbath."

"And I don’t think he’s even ready or fit for that," a netizen tweeted while another user wrote, "They will never be in the same room together. Ever."
