As the trial began, notable family members, reportedly including First Lady Jill Biden, Hunter's wife Melissa Cohen, and his sister Ashley Biden arrived at the courthouse to show their support.

In a statement to the media, President Biden emphasized his support for his son while refraining from commenting on the ongoing federal case.

He praised Hunter's recovery from addiction and expressed his pride in his son’s resilience.

"I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today," President Biden began his statement.

"Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean," the statement added.

Internet reacts to President Joe Biden's comments for his son Hunter Biden amid federal firearm trial

The President’s statement generated mixed reactions online. Supporters praised his careful choice of words and the distinction he maintained between his presidential role and his personal feelings.

However not all were empathetic. Some criticized Hunter by commenting on his personal life.

"This is one of my favorite things about President Biden, he uses carefully thought out words vs knee jerk reactions," one supporter wrote.

Another commented, "He didn't attack the judge in ALL CAPS and insinuate his followers should dox their family members??" apparently referring to former President Donald Trump's reaction during his hush money trial.

A third noted, "He firmly separates his presidential duties from his personal feelings, refraining from commenting on ongoing legal matters while highlighting the importance of family support during tough times."

However, some users were critical. One suggested, "I’m getting the feeling that Hunter Biden is the sacrificial lamb for his father’s regime. He may not even know it."

A Trump supporter argued, "Resilience? Inspiring? Hunter is a crybaby. Resilience is what Donald Trump has. And his resilience is truly inspiring."

Another user lashed out, saying, "His life has been a train wreck! He’s a grown man that still looks for excuses."

"Hunter, Biden, by no means is resilient and inspiring to anyone. You just don’t do this stuff. That’s a respectable person. That’s an inspiring person. This is a man it never grew up and makes excuses," the user added.

Amidst these polarized views, another user declared, "Witch hunt! Taking Biden’s son hostage won't work."
