John Mulaney stepped onto the SNL stage and was greeted by cheers and applause from the live audience during his opening monologue. He said during his monologue, "You know, in 2020 I was in a drug rehab facility. I was on the phone with my dad. And he was very emotional and we were talking."
He added, "And he was trying to think of something wise to say. And at one point he goes, he goes, 'I just wish grandpa were here'. I said, 'Dad, if grandpa were here, he would be 118 years old. And I highly doubt he would have good advice about handling social media backlash'."

He continued, "Something tells me that a dairy farmer from east Troy, Wisconsin, who was too old to fight in World War II..."
He also added, "Sorry. Sorry. It's my favorite thing about him. He was too old for the oldest thing that ever happened. They needed every guy, and my grandpa showed up and they're like, 'Oh, no. We're good. We're full. We won'."
Mulaney had reportedly checked himself into a Pennsylvania rehab facility in 2020 to battle his cocaine and alcohol addiction.
The comedian has detailed in earlier interviews his experience with addiction which dates back to when he was 13 years old.
He explained that he was an outgoing kid growing up with an active social life and with very less fears. However, this changed when he turned 12.
Mulaney told Esquire in September 2019, "I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn't. I didn't know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again."
Mulaney said in 2014 that he had been sober since September 2005. However, in December 2020, he voluntarily checked into rehab for alcoholism and cocaine addiction, according to US Weekly.
John Mulaney gushes about welcoming his second child during 'SNL' monologue
John Mulaney also gushed about welcoming his second child, a daughter named Mei June, in September with Olivia Munn via surrogacy during his monologue on 'SNL'.
He said, "We have a five-week-old baby girl. And I have a two-year-old son. My wife takes care of the five-week-old and I take the two-year-old, and that's not fair. That's not an equal distribution of labor at all."
He joked, "I'll take a two-year-old. That's like saying I'll transport this convict across state lines. You hold a potato."
He then humorously talked about "looking down" his "whole life" at people shorter than him and told the crowd, "I have a baby. I look down at her. I have a two-year-old son, he's 34 inches tall. I also live with his mother, my wife, she's half-Chinese Vietnamese. She is four."
He continued to joke, "Her mother who lives with us is full Chinese Vietnamese. She is two feet tall and we have a wonderful nanny from the Philippines who helps us out all she is negative one feet tall."
