LOS ANGELES: John Nolan, a veteran British character actor known for his roles in the Batman trilogy and television series 'Person of Interest', has died at the age of 87.
Nolan, who was also the uncle of filmmaker Christopher Nolan, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026, according to multiple reports. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
With a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared across theater, film and television. His work included collaborations with both Christopher Nolan and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan.

John Nolan built a long career as a character actor, beginning in British theater before transitioning into film and television.
Born in London in 1938, he trained at London’s Drama Centre and started his career on stage, including performances at the Richmond Theatre. He later spent two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in productions such as 'Julius Caesar' and 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'.
He went on to establish himself in television, taking on roles in series such as 'Shabby Tiger' and the 1970 miniseries 'Daniel Deronda'. Over time, Nolan became a familiar face in supporting roles, working steadily across British and international productions.
His credits also included projects like 'General Hospital' and 'Enemy at the Door', reflecting a broad and consistent acting portfolio.
In film, Nolan appeared in several projects directed by his nephew Christopher Nolan, including 'Following' (1998), 'Batman Begins' (2005), 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012) and 'Dunkirk' (2017).
In the 'Dark Knight' trilogy, he portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks, a role that extended into promotional content tied to the films.
Despite often working in supporting roles, Nolan developed a reputation as a dependable and distinctive performer. He remained active well into his later years, with his final credited appearance coming in 2024 in the television series 'Dune: Prophecy'.

He was married to actress Kim Hartman, known for her work in television, and the couple had two children and grandchildren.
Following his death, Hartman described him as a “free spirit who always knew what he wanted and acted on his own terms,” adding that he was “the only truly original thinker” she knew.
The actor’s passing was first reported by the Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald. Nolan is remembered for a career that bridged British theater, television and major Hollywood productions.
