TENERIFE, SPAIN: Johnny Depp is diving into a whole new persona in his latest film, 'Day Drinker'.

Lionsgate confirmed Monday that filming is officially underway in Spain for the high-seas thriller, which reunites Depp with longtime friend and co-star Penelope Cruz, reports People.

In the first image released from the set, Johnny Depp, 61, is nearly unrecognizable, clutching a drink and staring off camera with a brooding intensity.

It’s his first Hollywood studio role since 2018’s 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald', marking a notable return for the actor after years away from major US productions.

Directed by 'The Amazing Spider-Man’s' Marc Webb, 'Day Drinker' follows a mysterious guest (Depp) who boards a luxury yacht and crosses paths with the boat’s bartender, played by 'Outer Banks' star Madelyn Cline.

The two are soon swept into a dangerous entanglement involving a criminal force, portrayed by Cruz.

“I’m excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope and this incredible cast,” said Webb in a statement. “We’re in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is gonna be fun.”

The cast also includes rising Spanish stars Manu Ríos and Aron Piper, along with Juan Diego Botto and Anika Boyle.

While Depp recently starred in the French-language film 'Jeanne du Barry' and directed the indie drama 'Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness', 'Day Drinker' marks a return to big-budget Hollywood for the actor, who has kept a relatively low profile since his headline-dominating legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
