WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is drawing sharp criticism after choosing to attend a UFC event in Miami at a moment when delicate backchannel efforts with Iran collapsed.

The timing coinciding with intense negotiations led by top US officials quickly became a talking point on MS NOW on April 11, where anchors openly questioned the president’s priorities.

Jonathan Capehart questions Trump's 'ridiculous' outing

On a weekend broadcast, host Jaqueline Alemany walked viewers through the sequence of events, contrasting two parallel tracks - one diplomatic, the other highly public.

As she explained it, while senior officials were locked in prolonged negotiations with Iranian counterparts, Trump was making a high-profile appearance cageside at a major fight night.

She also noted uncertainty over whether the president was fully briefed on the status of talks at the time.

That contrast quickly drew blunt reactions from her co-hosts.

“It’s ridiculous!” said Jonathan Capehart, arguing that a moment like this demanded visible leadership. “He should be in the Situation Room!”

The criticism escalated when Eugene Daniels jumped in, dismissing the idea that the optics were accidental. “He don’t care!” he said. Capehart doubled down saying “Does not give a damn!”

Daniels went further, implying that even symbolic engagement matters during geopolitical uncertainty.

“He’s obviously proving that he really doesn’t really care,” Daniels said, adding that even a minimal effort to appear engaged whether from the White House or elsewhere would have sent a different signal.

Vance confirms failed talks with Iran

JD Vance said high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran ended without a deal after hours of negotiations in Pakistan, with Tehran rejecting Washington’s proposed terms.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Vance made clear the impasse followed nearly a full day of closed-door discussions that ultimately failed to produce any breakthrough.

“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,” he said, framing the collapse as a bigger setback for Iran than for the United States.

As fallout from the failed talks deepened,  the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said US negotiators “failed to gain the trust” of their Iranian counterparts following the collapse in Islamabad.

The breakdown quickly escalated tensions further. Within hours, Donald Trump ordered the United States Navy to impose a full-scale naval blockade on Iran, including the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, signaling a sharp shift from diplomacy to direct pressure.
