Joy Reid rips Donald Trump as he compares January 6 crowd size to Martin Luther King Jr's audience
WASHINGTON, DC: Joy Reid ripped Donald Trump after he compared his January 6 crowd to the attendees of Martin Luther King’s speech.
The former president said, as reported by NBC News, “Nobody has spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King, when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people.”
Trump claims to attract more people than Martin Luther King's speech
Donald Trump noted, “When you look at the exact same picture and everything is the same — because it was the fountains, the whole thing all the way back to go from Lincoln to Washington — and you look at it, and you look at the picture of my crowd, we actually had more people.”
But MSNBC's Joy Reid slammed him and began accusing him of not meeting voters.
She said, as reported by Raw Story, “It kind of helps if you take the time to actually go out and meet the voters. While [Kamala] Harris and [Tim] Walz have been putting in the miles, hitting multiple states this week with more to go, all Trump has done is hit the putting greens as he remained holed up at Mar-a-Lago.”
“Wasn't he the one who was complaining throughout his New York criminal trial earlier this year that all he wanted to do was be on the campaign trail?” she continued.
She also mentioned, “Well, today was the first time he took a break from his demanding schedule of walking around a putting green and eating McDonald's cheeseburgers to hold a press conference at his Florida estate.”
Joy Reid shows pictures of two events to clear things
Joy Reid then proceeded to call Trump out for his crowd-sized boast.
“Just to set the record straight — and I cannot believe I have to do this — here's a picture of the 1963 March on Washington, and a picture of Trump's crowd on January 6th, before a bunch of them stormed the Capitol, which he claims was bigger, a bigger crowd than Dr King's,” she stated as she showed the photos on screen.
She further mentioned, “One of these crowds is clearly larger than the other, at 250,000 strong, while the other is basically hooligan-sized. And why is he boasting about his crowd size on January 6th anyway?
“And again, on crowd size. Here is Harris' crowd in Philadelphia. And here is Trump's crowd in the same exact arena.”
“Just look with your eyes as to who filled more seats. You can literally just look,” Reid added.
Netizens call Donald Trump’s comparison ‘idiotic’
Besides, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) also slammed Trump on X.
It tweeted, “Donald Trump just said that he had a bigger crowd on January 6 than Dr Martin Luther King did when he delivered ‘I Have A Dream’ ...Not only is that completely false, but here’s what is more important: MLK’s speech was about democracy. Trump’s was about tearing it down.”

Meanwhile, a reader below The Raw Story article commented, “What a dweeb. No one cares about how many people attend rallies. Yet he is OBSESSED with this. He is so mentally unbalanced and damaged that it would be sad in most people, but in his case it just shows how desperate he is to prove he is better than someone else. His self hate and inferiority complex is massive.”
Another user said, “Crowd sizes and TV ratings are all that matter to Trump as they are the only ways his ego measures itself.”
“I guess this means Donald Trump will have to pay rally attendees to fill up those empty seats. The criminal cult leader doesn't like being upstaged by Kamala Harris. Not having large crowd sizes hurts his fragile ego,” another one stated.
A user noted, “Fact check: The congressional Jan. 6 committee pegged Trump's crowd at 53,000 people, about one-fifth of the 250,000 who were estimated to be at King's famous address from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.”
“Trump is confused with old movie reels of Hitler in Nuremberg. He thought they were his rallies,” another one remarked.
Another user posted, “It's idiotic of him to even make the comparison to MLK's crowd size..... Donald invites mockery then complains about the mockery he receives.”
Another person added, “Dude, this is getting pathetic even for you. Just flee to a country that America doesn't have an extradition treaty with, and just disappear.”
